I see some here recomend trimming "to a uniform length". Can someone explain what that means in a "practical" sense. In my last batch of new .223 a couple were down to 1.755 (trim length is 1.760). Im sure that cant mean that to achieve "uniform length" i should be trimming all,of the brass down to 1.755?? Thanks.

I think that's what it means....

I asked a trimming question last week, and the consensus seemed to be that most will wait until some of their brass are getting close to SAAMI spec length, and then they'll trim all of that batch of brass back to .01-ish from SAAMI.

Max length for 223 is 1.760" and not the trim length as you state in your post. So the cases should be trimmed to 1.750"

I measure my cases after I come back from the range - if some are 1.7605 I trim the whole bunch back to 1.7500 and begin the reloading process by inspecting each one (necks) for any visible signs of splitting.

cheers

yes that is correct.

I'm trimming my cases every time I reload them, with the lee trimming/gauge tool. I reload rifle cartridges for precision shooting. Sometimes, there are cases that don't get trimmed, as they did'nt expand enough.

Ok...so again, relatively new to this so...terms may not yet be perfect. Thanks for the correction ....but really asking whether all cases should be trimmed TO THE LENGTH OF THE SHORTEST... in order to gain 'uniform length'.

I would trim them all back to .010 less than max length. If you have your trimmer out and setup, you might as well do them all.

That would be the ideal solution so that you can get a more consistent crimp case to case (assuming you do crimp your round).

If it's just for plinking which my 223 is, then it's not concern unless it's over the spec'd length or drastically shorter.

Do you shoot precision target or semi auto plink?
For semiauto plink trim under max no one cares
For benchrest try to trim all to same length.
If you bought 100 new lapua cases of the same batch anyway, they will all be the same length and expand the same.
If you are shooting range pickup and 1f mixed headstamp dont ask about same length trimming.... Useless.
