Tripod Recommendations?

I am looking for a tripod to mount my spotting scope on and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good one, or one that has worked well for you? I'd rather not have to re-mortgage my home to get it, so please keep the replies somewhat moderate as far as gear prices :) Thank you.
 
Manfrotto tripods are bomb proof. The one I bought rescued the cheap Barska scope I bought to help me see my shots at 100+ metres. Without its secure, vibration free easy to adjust head, I would have shot the Barska into a bazillion pieces.

Put this little ball head on either and you will be set forever...the same one I have on my window mount for my spotter. I use the bigger BH-40 for my photography stuff.

Assume you will want to use the spotter while in position shooting?

See TR and F class spotter stands. These are very specific to use while in the shooting position.

Mine is a Ray Vin. There are a few others.

conventional tripods do not work well.

I have a Manfrotto 190xprob tripod with a 222 joystick head. You can use it from standing to prone. I use it for my Mark 4 spotter and also have a shooting cradle, pop off the spotter, put on the cradle and use the tripod as a very stable shooting platform. The 190xprob can go all the way to prone and in conjunction with the joystick head you can manipulate the scope to any position or angle you want. As Jerry mentioned there are several purpose built stands for range work as well. Depends what you are looking for. I realize you don't want to mortage the house but buying something half decent will save you in the long run.

Thanks for chiming in here Jerry. Do you offer any of the stands you mentioned?

Thanks to the others in the thread as well; some nice options put forth here. As this will be used exclusively for range work, I have accepted the fact that I will have to shell out a bit more coin than I had originally intended, but I am sure it will be money well spent.
 
If you are going to shoot F-Class matches, you will have to abide by the DCRA firing line rules. You have only so much width available for yourself and your scoring partner. If you shoot single shots, you will have to stay in position to watch his shot and then make yours. IMHO, an oversized photographic tripod will just get in the way.

Most DCRA shooters set up their firing position with the scope beside their supporting elbow, so that they roll slightly out of position to see the target without moving their chest and elbow. The typical model has two legs that flip out from a third point of contact and the central elevation column.
 
Manfrotto, don't be afraid to buy used, if parts wear out you can replace, a lot cheaper than buying new, and you don't need a new one unless you are photog and using it to make a living. Mine is old and was junk to a prof photog, solid as a rock for range work, really

Some of the best money I ever spent in this hobby. I don't even know where my bipod is anymore.
 
I know this is an old thread but thought I would post anyways
I have an old Regal Freeland Regal Bipod stand which was great for prone. Had an extra rod so it could also be used while standing - although a but wobbly - got it along with an old Bushnell scope - (Was considered high quality 40 years ago - with different power eye pieces). I updated the scope and it still worked great until my recent purchase of a Kowa 883 which is just to big and heavy so I now have a Vin-Ray Eclipse tripod stand (from Creedmore) which I love - Solid, stable and easy to adjust, plus with the extension bar you dont need to move much to look from your scope through the spotter
 
I did shoot my Barska scope into a bazillion pieces even after I mounted it on the Manfrotto. Great tripod but bad idea. It took me almost 2 hours to clean up the debris from the scope...
