Eagle, they are in the 900 meg range, (UHF) which is basically line of sight. They have a power rating of a fraction of a watt. By comparison, if that is you beside a police car, your radio probably has 50 watts. It also transmits to a repeater, which re-transmits it down to whoever it is you are talking to. That is, any radio that can reach the repeater, in a good, high location, can talk with anyone else who can reach the repeater.
All these little citizen radios operate on simplex. This means they reach directly to the other station. Your police radio also has a simplex operating mode. You likely use it, if for example, two or three of you are on a mission by yourselves, to keep in contact with each other, and not bother the regular channel.
I read the ad, and its only advantage seems to be in a very crouded area of people all using these little radios. They actually say 100,000!
The ad points to them being a gimic, with no practical advantage over a standard frs or gmr radio.
