i have FN .22 trombone rifle patented by browning around 85 years old. I have only fired .22 longs out of it cause i had few boxes kicking around... but today i noticed it is marked .22 L not .22LR. Does this mean it will not accept LR? Does anyone have any knowledge on this?

if i remember correctly, the 22 long uses the same case as the 22 lr, but a shorter bullet- kind of a medium, if you will- 22 cap, 22 short, 22 long, and 22 long rifle- i think that's the way it goes- 22 short is a short case, short bullet, 22 long is long case, short bullet, and 22 lr is long case ,long bullet- you may not be able to chamber long rifles die to the length of the cartridge, and you may not want to b/c of the pressures

i can get cci .22 longs i like them too since i use these only for target only they are fun. just wanted to know if these rifles were designed specifically for .22longs.
another thing i found out is that it will fire if the trigger is pressed when cycling the action. Kind of cool but have to be sure to keep off the trigger when chambering

It would be safe to shoot .22LR, but the barrel might have a slow rifling twist that won't stabilize the heavier bullets. Lots of Browning Trombones were made for .22LR; strength should be adequate.

I asked this question awhile ago. I was told that it should be no problem. I also asked a 'smith about it, and he said no problem as well.
