Interested on opinions on this, I noticed another thread that got sidetracked by this debate so let's debate this on a thread devoted to nothing else.

I am a devout trophy hunter, that does not mean that I do not use the meat or see that it is used, and I abide by all game laws.
This is not a debate about poaching, but a debate about the different motivations for going afield and legally harvesting game.

Opinions?

I think you spelled sustenance wrong. ;)

Still a noob to hunting but meat is the main goal. If a trophy presented itself it would be a bonus.

I hunt for either one.... the quarry is dependant on what is in season... I always look forward to a marinated slow roasted venison backstrap.... but I enjoy hunting yotes and would love to hunt cougar and wolf again some day........

I'm a meat hunter. I don't care what's growing out of it's head. That said, as long as the meat is used I have no problem with trophy hunting.

I've come across deer carcasses with the heads removed and the whole body (ies) left at the side of the trail. IMO that should be illegal if it's not already, and the people who waste food like that should be strung up by their balls.

Its a free country, if what you are hunting is legal and you have the tags, the usage of the meat should be dictated by the regs and if there are no regs, at that point its your own personal choice.

Do we really need freedom hating statist to tell us what is right and what is wrong? Let them decide for themselves and not try and control others with thier own personal ethics and choices.

No, he didn't spell sustenance at all. He used a different, more appropriate word.

Like you, I would eat a trophy animal, but I'm actually looking for food. For me, that's at least partly because I haven't been hunting long enough to be fussy.

I hunt for the sport of it. I enjoy wild meat, but I hardly ever fill my tag for the sake of filling my tag. I enjoy a challenging hunt and for me, it is a lot about the trophy. This past season was a bit different however. The only big game that I bagged was a cow moose - and she made delicious sausage among other things. I would rather go out hunting and not shoot anything rather than feel pressured to shoot an animal to simply fill my freezer.

I hunt for enjoyment. If I can get a trophy that means something to me, great. Meat on the table is a fringe benefit and a constant reminder of the hunt.

Edit: Occasionally, I do hunt for meat only. You cannot beat the taste of a wild pheasant or a nice young cow moose.

Equal. I take does to manage the ratio, and for the meat. Once I feel its in balance, and the rut is near, I am out there looking for a trophy; as someone said meat on the table serves a memory of the hunt, how do you hang onto it when the meats gone?

Going out and dropping a doe is rewarding, but not challenging, or exciting.

Depends the species. Moose and Elk - shoot the first legal one I see. Meat is more important. Deer? Trophy hunt. Usually end up sharing venison, so horns are more important to me with deer.

I do both. I tend to shoot a meat animal early in the season, and then I become a trophy hunter with any remaining tags. Best of both worlds.

I start off as a trophy hunter, and as the end of season gets closer I take take a doe I havent got a nice buck. I hunt for meat, but a big buck adds a nice.story to the roast in the oven lol

I'm definately a trophy hunter, moreover; I hunt to hunt. Many times I've hung my unused deer tag on the Christimas tree without regret. Any small to average whitetail or mule deer buck can be harvested quite easily in one day, therefore this is one reason why I hunt trophies. The other reason is that there is no smarter or wiser ungulate to hunt other than the Ellusive mature whitetail buck........bar none.
I truely don't mind meat hunters, in fact one area that I hunt whitetails has to many does and they need to be thinned out. This past fall (2011) my son and I counted between 50 to 90 whitetails in one quarter section where 60% were fawns. With this years very mild winter there will be a population explosion with whitetails.
