Lets say if you came accross a book whitetail,obviously wounded by some other hunter, bleeding like a stuck pig, you with a tag in hand, looking for a big buck, would you shoot it? Would it have the same "trophy" worth as a deer you shot yourself? Would you feel obligated to put an end to the deer's suffering? Years back came accross a doe that was shot high in back leg and I tagged her.

Lucky me, one for the books! Just because someone else wounded it does not mean I did not hunt it. Kinda like dating I guess, if I only waited for virgins I'd still be one meeself...

No matter, I'd dispatch it too, post-haste ... and it wouldn't matter whether
it was a "trophy" head or not. But if a a guy showed up withinin the next 20 minutes (i.e., obviously following the blood trail) and gave a reasonable explanation of where he was, how he shot it, why he waited, etc, I'd defer and let him tag it. Good sportsmanship isn't that tough a thing !

I was hunting with a gang once that one fella hit a nice buck high in the boiler.It ran a couple hundred yards after falling twice in that distance another hunter from the same gang finished it off,and claimed the kill.I was pissed off ,and I wasn't even the first shooter.It takes all kinds I guess.

Tag in hand?....I would certainly dispatch it. No tag in hand?....I'd still do it because I don't want the animal to suffer. This actually happened to me a few years back, F&W came to my house and gave me a tag for it

Unfortunately with no tag it would be illegal in Ontario and guaranteed to cost you if the Game Wardens were apprised. Not saying I would or wouldn't just pointing out the obvious truth for the new hunters in Ontario.
Agreed BR, just because I did it doesn't make it legal or right. I should mention that the deer was strung up in a barbed wired fence along a highway. I weighted out my options and made my choice. But, like BR says, you have to consider that you new hunters have to carefully weight out our options and the consequences of your actions. I happen to have a very close relationship with F&W here in HR for reasons than span back across many hunting seasons. Over the years, I've formed a solid relationship with those officers, we meet at various club functions in town and know each other on a first name basis.
A buddy of mine has a 150 WT on his wall. As I understand the story,(half way into a bottle-only reason he told me), they were driving just at first light and saw a truck in a field. Truck buggared off as soon as they saw my friends.
They thought it seemed fishy so they went to take a look and there was mr. buck on the ground. My buddy tagged it and home they went.
Did he do the right thing??????

Put the poor thing out of it's misery and pain.... One way or another, meat is meat, whether it is your kill or not.
If someone in your hunting party honestly shoots an animal of the wrong ### or type , for example a mulie buck when only whitetail are open, no one has a tag,what does a guy do, leave it for the scavengers, take it home illegally, call F&W,I know the first thing I would do is talk to my buddy about the importance of knowing what your about to kill , gut the animal, call F&W and wait to see what would unfold.
