Trophy....not a trophy?

I put a calf moose out of its misery one time. It had been shot in the leg. When we got up to it I could smell the gangreen(if thats how its spelt). i went back to a friends place and phoned the game warden. He said to go back see if anything was good and he would give us a pass(of some sort). To take it without cancelling my tag. Thats what I did but it was to far gone. Dam because thats great meat.
Yes if it would have been a trophy it would sstill be my trophy no matter. I hunted it I shot it and it was all my time and money. Just cause some fool took a bad shot and wrecked some of my meat.

I'm not a trophy hunter, but would finish off a wounded animal if I came across one. I would, as one poster above said, be giving some thought before calling in the game wardens. In my area, we have mule deer mixed in with whitetails. Although it hasn't happened to me, I know darn well a few muleys have gone to waste. Right around here, you need to be drawn for mule deer, so very few whitetail hunters have muley tags. I know, I know... muleys are quite different from whitetails, but......
All I can say now is that I have smartened up since I was a young man. Some of the long shots, running shots, near dark shots, too early shots we took were foolish and very poor sportsmanlike. These days, I am likely as not to get skunked, but I appreciate the priviledge of being free to go out and stroll around in a nice quiet area and carry one of my favorite old rifles.

I once had a conversation with a CO about just this thing. His response was: We would thank you for being so honest and ethical. Then we would charge you. It's up to the courts not us what your penalty should be. You've made the mistake, now do you pay the price?

SO WHILE YOUR WAITING YOUR 15MINS, THEN TAKE ANOTHER 15 MINS TO WALK QUIETLY OVER TO YOUR DEER AND FIND OUT THAT SOME PRICK IS GUTTING IT WITH HIS TAGE ON IT..WELL HE HAD BETTER HAVE HIS RIFLE HANDY THAT IS ALL I CAN SAY...

Some of you guys are saying shoot it and wait for a while to see if someone else comes along. Any of the Co's I have talked to tell me that as soon as you are sure that your animal is dead and you have located it the first thing he wants you to do is cancel your tags. SO if in the scenario used here was the ultimate buck, I wouldnt hesitate to shoot and tag it. As far as putting a game animal down for humane rerasons , I have seen many deer that were stumbling around after the seson was over or limbs missing and called the CO and was told to leave it alone and predators will take care of it, if you go shoot it I will charge you with shooting out of season. Go figure!!!!!

I've phone the CO's about a deer with a busted hip, and they said "shoot it" this was in July.
If I was in hunting season and I saw a deer , bleeding or not, i'd shoot it and tag it, UNLESS I new a hunter was on it's trail.

, It's for the asshats that would not do what beretta boy said. Because you know very well that some goof out there would think it's finders keepers, when you come upon your buck following the blood trail and the goof says it's his buck....because he found it on it's last breath and finished it off. I sure would not want to find myself in that situation.But obvisiouly if the deer is only slightly wounded and no shot heard, then YES it's fair game, and still your trophy.

That's all you can say?....why don't you elaborate a bit, what are you saying?, you'll start a shoot-em-up over a deer?. You need to evaluate your own comments before calling others "pricks".
Jump all over me if you want, but I'm not law enforcement, so I would not report it to the authorities as I see no good would come of it for my friend. I'd keep my mouth shut. You said it was an honest mistake, so I base my actions on that. Whether I'd ever hunt again with the guy would depend on whether I believe it would ever happen again. I don't think I'm responsible for his mistakes, not unless I encourage it. I see no duty to report anything and I can only get in trouble if I get involved in covering it up.
One of my hunting partners this last season got a solid hit on a big whitetail but it was determined to go trucking off through the toolies. we tracked a spotty blood trail on that buck for three days loosing the trail here and there and having to cut circles to find the trail again. with no snow sometimes all we found was a single drop of blood on a leaf as the deer went by, but all I could think about was this animal suffering out there and had to go back out the next day after giving up the day before. we finally found him on the third day and it was nice to stand over him and know that he was dead.
i don't think i would bother fighting with someone who finished off my animal, i would just be happy that it was finished off.

You make a good point that it could well have someone pursuing it, having mortally wounded it, but waiting for it to drop. In that case, I'd step aside and say, here's your deer. They'll always be another chance. Especially if it was a real trophy.
