Trophy....not a trophy?

On the topic of "trophy deer" it seem's that a little competition comes into play when deer season starts, everyone is looking for that edge, willing to do almost anything to get that big white or the monster mulie ,maybe bend a few rules, shoot a few minutes before dark , after dark, big bastard was crossing the road so a guy jumps out of the truck and drops a book deer on the road and quickly loads it in the back.Is a trophy buck taken streeeetching the rules really a trophy? I always see big bucks on the way home from the deer field, many the time I wished for a big bush bumper on the front of my truck.I here the saying " If it's book it dies no matter what" from lots hunters. Is breaking a little rule okay when trophy bucks are at stake, most of the big boys go nocturnal when the season opens and are dying of old age.

if he is bleeding like a stuck pig he is dead within 1/2 hour and will feed the poor starving cyotes
NO Im not going to tag a crappy deer just cuz he is bleeding.......... hes not my problem
Im hunting for big deer and would rather not shoot a deer than a tiniee bopper

I know that is going to drive the meat hunters crazy but thats ok cuz then you can come behind me and clean up the "road kill"

Hard to say what most would do and what I might do, but this meat hunter really does not want any previously injured meat.

There are a number of posts in this thread that I agree with, and a number that I found pretty frustrating too. Here's my take on things.

If I'm out hunting, whether it's still hunting or on my way to a stand, and I come across a deer that is obviously badly wounded, I will not hesitate to shoot it, whether it is a trophy buck, a spike buck, or a doe. I would like to stress BADLY wounded, not a deer with a limp, I mean something with a leg blown off, or covered in blood. If I have time to observe the deer's injuries, I hopefully will have time to decide what to do. If I heard a shot before seeing the deer, that makes my choice easier. I will definitely shoot the deer, just to make the tracking job easier for the hunter who already shot it. In my mind, it's his deer. if it was a bad hit, I'll just swallow my tongue. I'm not willing to get into an "I saw it first, yeah but I shot it better" arguement with a guy with a loaded gun in his hands. If the deer appears to be badky hurt from a previous encounter, but I don't have the right tag, I'll still shoot it to put it out of it's misery. It might survive the winter, but it will probably die from predation shortly, all I'm doing is saving it some discomfort.

If I shoot a hurt animal even though I don't have the right tag, I will NOT report it. If I feel that I did the right thing, but know that by the letter of the law I did not, and will be punished, all that matters to me is that I did the right thing. I'm not going to make trouble for myself by calling the autorities, because even if the court does decide I did the right thing, and they probably won't, it will still cost me an arm and a leg to get that decision.

I have also "finished" animals that were hit on the road. Racoons, rabbits, and 2 deer. Both deer were hit in the summer, they were dying, so I sped them on their way, one with a shovel, and one by cutting it's throat, and left them there. I'm not driving around with a dead deer in my truck out of season.

Anyways, that's my 2 cents.

Cheers.
Tim

SO WHILE YOUR WAITING YOUR 15MINS, THEN TAKE ANOTHER 15 MINS TO WALK QUIETLY OVER TO YOUR DEER AND FIND OUT THAT SOME PRICK IS GUTTING IT WITH HIS TAGE ON IT

So what happens if someone comes along and finds the deer, waits 20 minutes, then tags the buck, then 5 minutes later you show up following the bloodtrail? The tag is already canceled. How are you going to react?

..WELL HE HAD BETTER HAVE HIS RIFLE HANDY THAT IS ALL I CAN SAY...

Anyone that is prepared to get into a violent confrontation involving firearms in this situation, should not be allowed to own a firearm.

If I saw a deer of the type I was looking for, but previously wounded, I'd shoot it and tag it. I don't care if another hunter wounded it or if a cougar took a roast out of it. Injuries happen in the wild world, and it's no less a trophy.

If I saw an injured deer that was NOT of the type I'm looking for, I'd let it be, if it was walking. I once put down a deer on the side of the highway, that was clearly dying. But if it was limping around, on it's own accord, I wouldn't be "putting it out of it's misery." I would look down on a guy that did that, unless he was willing to cancel his tag. I've seen alot of 3 legged deer and bear that get along just fine, and wildlife doesn't need you to determine what needs to be "put down."

And if I shot a previously wounded deer, and had canceled my tag, and some loudmouth jerk came up to me and tried to claim it, saying it was "his" deer, I'd tell him to hit the rifle range more often, because if I didn't hear a shot, the deer has been traveling too far, and he didn't get a good hit on it.
