Hey guys, first off, i'm a complete newb with ARs :D

Here is the situation; I have a factory built, stock RRA rifle. Had around 400 rounds down the pipe without a single hicup. Everything was P-E-R-F-E-C-T. Than, 3 weeks ago, the mall ninja in me decided to change the stock (and buffer tube, which is around 0.20" shorter, problem?). Here is what's happening now:

-Bolt isn't locking on empty mag (rifle cycles fine)

-When manually opening the bolt gently (with bolt release button), it stays locked but a single tap on the side of the receiver or putting in down on the bench without super dupper extra love and it closes

-When inserting a mag w/open bolt, if I use the bolt release button, the bolt rides OVER the first round instead of bringing it home. When closing the bolt with charging handle, everything is smooth...

Things I have tried:
-I checked the buffer tube to make sure it held the buffer retaining pin correctly and it's fine
-lube the hell out of it, everything in the upper was super dry (didn't solve anything though)

Things I haven't tried but that might help:

-other mags, only have one right now... (I spend too much on pistols and ammo  )

-changing the bolt catch

-selling the rifle for 200$ and buying a norinco SKS

Fun fact: when doing rapid fire, bolt stays open on empty mag, I would say 80% of the time.

Any other tips? Thanks for your time, greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a mag issue but just for the hell of it I would try to tighten the mag release button. Maybe the mag isn't sitting properly.

Check the bolt catch spring / plunger to ensure they are operating properly and the spring is not broken.

Buffer spring is too long.

Bingo

Did you change the spring or buffer itself?

More than likely the shorter buffer tube has put enough pressure on the assembly, to cause the issues you now have.

Still had the stock buffer and spring. Did some playing around and the spring was indeed the source of the problems. Didn't think such a small length difference would cause this. Thank you guys ;)
