They are both modified carriers with the end cut off, to allow the buffer to be attached to the carrier.

As far as I can tell the they start as FA carriers that are cut down

What I would like to know is what the buffer weight is on each
 
For a comparison here is the TROY BCG on top, my old Daniel Defense BCG on bottom. I believe the DD BCG is a FA? And if it is then then TROY started as a FA and was cut down
