Hey all,

I recently acquired a Troy PAR in .308 and fully intend to make it my hunting rifle for the upcoming deer season in Ontario (Ottawa Valley Area) this year, I have a couple of 10 round pistol mags for it and was curious if these mags were legal to hunt with? Considering that the .303 comes standard with 10 round mags it would be reasonable to assume that the 10 rounders for a pump rifle would be as well. However we know this country is full of rules that are not rational and full of caveats so I figure I would ask the question here.

Understanding that these mags are technically made for a previously restricted (now prohibited) platform and are considered to be a pistol magazine would there be restrictions for hunting with these? Would I need to use a pinned 5 round magazine or because it is a manually operated firearm would 10 rounds be acceptable?

You can see the mental gymnastics I am going through to figure this out.

looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Ontario hunting regs specifically limit shotgun capacity to 3 during hunting. Rifle mag limits are not listed for hunting. You are good to go with LAR pistol mags.

From CGN Search:

"On page 23 of the 2010 Hunting Regulations Summary states:
Under the Criminal Code of Canada you cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds more than five shots for a semi-automatic centre fire non-restricted firearm unless that clip/magazine has been specifically exempted, pursuant to the Firearms Regulation"

Under the Criminal Code of Canada, you generally cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds more than five shots for a semi-automatic centrefire firearm.

"Note that it says Criminal Code of Canada ... Not Ontario, not some municipality. Special business bulletin 72 states that LAR-15 pistol mags can be inserted into a rifle since the law is interpreted as applying to the magazine, not the firearm."
