So earlier this week i walked into my local shop and they were putting a Savage TRR-SR on the shelf. Iv been looking for one for quite a while but they seem to be few and far between and by the time iv found one its already been sold. Needless to say after fondleing it the employee i deal with went up stairs and came back with a price that i couldnt say no to so i had to buy it! and this weekend i got a change to go to the range with it.. Iv yet to see anyt reviews on oneso i thought i would share my thoughts and experiances for you guys..
conditions- slightly overcast, 15-18*, winds gusting from 0-aprox 8kmh
Rifle- Savage trr-sr
scope - elite 3200 5-15x40ao
ammo tested - cci blazer, cci stingers, american eagle high velocity and federal champion 525 bulk pack
first the rifle - i found the "tactical" style stock to be very comfortable, its pretty much a smaller version of the mcmillan A-5 stock, the length of pull seemed a bit short at first, but ones i got all settled down into my shooting possiosion it was actually quite comfortable. The comb of the stock put me at perfect high for a nice clean sight picture with out having to hold my head in some awkward position. The rifle comes with the savage accutrigger and is adjustable from about 2lbs up to 6. the trigger breaks incredibly crisp with virtually no noticable creep. the rail system made for easy mouting of optics and pretty much leaves you free to moutn any kind of sight you want weather it be scope, reflex (why??ha) reddot or what have you.
the bad- the only bad that i came acreoss what due to my personal preferance and set up! with my set up, the rail system seems to be to long on the front end. with the bushnell scope the obj. bell is quite long and drawn out, this puts the scope on the very most forward position of what i would consider comfortable.any furgter back the the bell contacts the rail. As it sits im lucky if i could slide a peice of construction paper between the rail and scope bell. High rings would fix this but i think this would change my cheek weld to much to be comfortable.
Ammo- at 25yds pretty much all ammo shot the same in the .2 to .3" center to center for 5shot groups
50 yds
the federal 525 bulk - i didnt have much hope for this and i was pretty much right. i couldnt manage any thing better then 3/4-1" groups at 50
A.E - shot decently a group or 2 down in the 1/2" range but would average around 5/8 so this is the messurement i will go with
stingers - velocity is great but isnt alwasy accurate as you all know, i wasnt really impressed it seemed it would shoot 2 different groups with the same POA, 2 or 3 would be right where i shot, and the others would be high right by about 1/2" and this was the consistane pattern with all groups shot.
Blazer - like all of my other .22s this gave me the best bang for my buck! at 50yds, the average was around 1/2" groups with 1 or 2 opening up to around 5/8s but still IMO shot the best of the ammo i had to test..
*** i had feeding issues with the blazer, but from the mag not the rifle, the nose of the bullet for the blazer seemes to be alot more rounded then the others i tested, giving in a longer O.A.L and the tip would rub the inside of the mag and not allow the follower to push the nest round up. I feel this perticular mag might be just out of spec, as iv shot other mk II's and not had this problem
now out to 100yds
federal - i didnt even botehr after its poor preformance at 50.
A.E - droped off a bit more then i thought it would, and the inconsistancys in the manufactureing process started to show threw. my best group i avaeraged was about 2 1/4"s
stingers - same pattern as at 50 but really opened up, putting me at about 2" group size
blazer - once again best bang for the buck of what i had. i shot a group of 10 at 100 and was withing 1.5", after my testing i just started to blast the target and must hav had 50+ rounds withing that 1.5" group.
just for s**ts and giggles i went out to 200 for the blazer.. this is where i was actually really impressed with the rifle! not useing a match grade ammo, and the first day out with the gun, i just blasted off a random amount of shots, BUT all of them were well with in a 5" group.
now onto pictures!!
the rifle!
50yards with the cci blazzer ammo **keep in mind that there is 2 different groups on this targer, done intentionally
and the 100yds with the blazer agiain. that 11th obviously high shot is from my dad.. :\ invited him out for the day and he wanted to try my rifle. rather then shoot a blank target he thought he would shoot the "used" one. oh well haha
Final verdict! 8.5 out of 10. with a possible 9/10 pending.. the rifle lost points due to the rail. even with the first lug of the rail removed , hell even tapered back, the scope problem would be resolved. I realized this is due to my set up, but i know for a fact many guys will run a 44 or even 50mm Obj scope and will need to go with a high or extra high ring unless you want the scope way far forward...
id like to get a box or 2 of match grade ammo and see just how truely accurate the rifle is. and if it does get better id gladly bump it to a 9/10
deffinatly a worth while buy! and it kept me very distrated from all my other rilfes at the range all weekend... if you see one i highly recomend grabbing it
