ok, before anyone explains about how blasphemous it would be to put bedliner on a classic wood stock, its been broken, glued and screwed and filled. It just so happens to be broken at tthe grip and the forestock where one would normaly place their hands for shooting.

Now, let me elaborate a bit, I picked up a beater savage 340 30-30, it was cheap, I knew there was damage to the stock, the rifleing and blueing are pretty good, the stock wasnt good, but I knew that there was some damage before I bought it.

I should mention, this rifle will be a loaner to get new shooter into hunting, I think its a decent caliber for a new shooter to get comfortable with and cheap enough to lend out. I just want it to not look like old torn hand me down clothes to keep it appealing for them.

Having sanded it down last evening to take out some dings, get the stain off, shaped the grip so it wasnt so square I was also able to see what its potential was for staining the wood, it was once a decent piece of furniture, I threw some tru oil on it but its a scarred up ugly old girl due to its franken stock. Best solution I can see is to roll or spray some bedliner on it.

So... Not wanting to spend $80 on a bedliner kit from crappy tire, is there any good options for bed liner in a spray can or something cheap to roll on? Id like something thick with lots of texture that will bond to tru oil reasonably well.

If anyone has a picture for the product they have tried that would most appreciated! Thanks guys.

Go for it.. I had my Motorcycle done in Rhino liner this year.. Looks incredible.. I hear there is a product called "Al's liner" that you can get kids for to roll on and it's tintable any color... Not sure price but I'm sure a google search will reveal that.. There's a guy down the road from me that uses it for a lot of trailers.

I just happen to be in the process of doing the same thing on a DA backpacker, buddy of mine from work gave me a can of spray-on rhino liner... dunno the cost of it tho

I did a cut down cooey 840 with that bed liner in a can you get at crappy tire. It comes in 1 qt tins. I painted it on with a foam roller brush and back rolled it after about 5 minutes of drying to give it a stippled texture. It's been on and thrashing around under my truck seat now for 4 or 5 years and has held up 100%. I gave it a home camo job over the bed liner late last year, that is holding up fine as well. The bed liner seems to be a very good substrate for Krylon paint.

Edit: the stock and forend of the middle gun are textured with bed liner

I have used a textured paint with a clear coat on some synthetic stocked rifles and it seems to hold up well and isn't terribly expensive.

:agree: Bed liner is very durable & paintable with the right coatings. On an old beat up stock, just sand with
100 grit paper to give the coating a good surface to grip onto.

Very nice little huntin' guns by the way!:)

cool guys, thanks for the ideas. I want it to have some depth to it, so I may just put on a few coats.

Actually just got evacuated out of bowness (calgary) for the flood. Had to catch up on this thread from a friends place

Im familiar with plasti dip, I want more texture, and from what ive seen that comes off to easy.

I actually want it to be thick and have alot of texture like the expensive pro bed liner coats

Thats a good idea for a gun you will toss around in the truck. I'm sure a Rhino liner guy would be able to spray it for you for a few bucks.

I tried rocker (gravel) guard from ctc once. Never dried well and finally had to strip it off.
That was about 10 years ago. Haven't tried it since. I like the bedliner idea.
