Truck Guns

I don't have a truck, so my guns live in their cabinet for long periods of the year, but when I'm out hunting with my dad I always bring my SKS, it's taken more deer than my .30-06!! The butler creek synthetic stock makes it look half decent (actually the stock looks nicer than the gun that lives in it, it's kinda horrible), and I don't mind if it gets banged around or wet or whatever.

I understand the concept of a "truck gun", but I've probably just been too anal about my guns to actually put the idea into practice. If I'm headed out and think I might have an opportunity to shoot either game or targets, I grab a gun or two or three from the lock boxes to take along with me, but none of them are really what might be commonly understood to be "truck guns". Any beaters that come my way tend to get fixed up or sold...though there is a recently acquired Lee Enfield in the locker, which with a little work, would likely fiill the bill quite nicely. ...hmmm...could be my next project!

I don't have the heart to have a "truck" gun. I like nice stuff and couldn't do it to any of them.

Maybe if I had an old lee-enfield that shot well, but I won't buy one specifically for a "truck gun" cause it doen't mean that much to me. If I think I'll be going somewhere that I need a rifle then I pack one, in a padded gun case, not rolling around on the floor getting beat to hell.

I don't think the idea of a "truck gun" necessarily implies that the gun is expected be abused. To me, it simply means a "do-all" rifle for the purpose of shooting targets of opportunity when shooting isn't planned. :)

I happened to have a few old 303s sitting aroudn not going to any real good use. I put one to work as my truck gun a few years back when I started commuting to work from out of town. Spending time on the highway gives you lots of time to see deer that have been hit by vehicles and, only once, one that was still alive with it's spine broken. I tell you what, I was damned glad to have a rifle with me, even if it was an old 303. I'll never be without a long gun, probably a rifle, in any vehicle I drive.
