I had a truglo front red fibre optic sight put on my Remington Semi-Auto rifle last year because I had trouble finding the standard brass front bead on my rifle when trying to take down a bear before he took me down. I didn't like that so I had the fibre optic put on the front. Last night I took my peep sight off the rear of my rifle and installed the fibre optic open sights that came with the front sight I bought last year. I think I like it better than the peep.

We do a lot of doggin' at my hunt camp and I'm wondering whether I'm better off with the fibre optic open sights on the rear, or the Williams peep sight I had on it before...

I usually have shots at moving deer, and it's pretty thick woods up there, and I stay out till dark a lot of times too.

I'm just curious about other peoples opinions and preferences?

Stick with a peep rear, but play with it, see how you feel with the fibre optic front and peep rear but the peep gives you move field of view.

eye sight problem? at age 50 something it happened to me. i need glasses to read but not for anything else. with out glasses i've got the same problem and with my glasses it's too much. a scope really helps. the peep sight should allow you a more open sight picture over a barrel mounted v sight, but it's whatever works for you.

I don't really want a scope since my shots are less than 50 yards most of the time.

I'm hearing I should put the peep back on.

Take a look at the peep, there is normally a screwed in insert into the rear sight, this is for really accurate shooting but it does knock down your field of view. When I take my 30-30 out with a williams peep on it I take that insert out when hunting at close range or where you may encounter running deer. This gives a ghost ring type of setup, meaning that when you look through the rear sight it seems to disappear. If you have this option take the gun out and see how it feels like that, I really like how it increases my field of view and it is much quicker.
Good luck

fox is correct the aperture can be unscrewed to make the peep larger and give you an even better sight picture. because of the hole being larger you may lose a little accuracy but in a hunting situation at 50 yds. it wouldn't even be noticable

Tye, the fiber optic sights can be great but myself and a few hunting buddies
have found them less than durable. broken a few off while dogging out deer
especially the front, always seem to snap the fiber optic pins. It is quite a
problem to continue the hunt untill it can be repaired. If you really like them
and you hunt in a remote place i would bring an extra or two. You will still
have to re-sight the rifle so bring lots of extra ammo too.
just my 2 penny's worth
