Hi everyone.

Just got a TRW bolt for Norc off the EE. It slid in a little tight at fist, but after a little working of the oprod it falls into place without assistance. I would like to know if anyone in the Halifax area has a set of headspace gauges I could use to check out how it's sitting.

One other question because I cannot find info on it, is it normal to have a bit of resistance between the bottom of the bolt and the face of the hammer when it is cocked after this install? Thank you.

I suspect you are somewhat new to the M14 platform. You are right that you should use gauges to determine headspace but fitting(by force or should be by lapping) should be done with a gauge rather than slamming the oprod home. This is to ensure that the bolt lugs have proper even bearing on the receiver.

The resistance on the bolt to hammer is normal such that you should always grease the bottom of your bolt.

I believe there are a few sticky posts on the main to help you with basic rep.

I have a full set of gauges, but I won't lend them out..... I am also 3/4 of the country away from you....

Sorry not much help....

As the previous poster stated, the bolt rubbing on the hammer is normal.

Out of curiosity, what prompted the bolt swap?

What was your headspace before swapping the bolt?

Have you lapped the TRW bolt in at all?

Is it the factory Nork barrel?

Do you know if the seller has another TRW bolt? lol

Thank you for the replies; the bolt was tested without the oprod in at all at first to see if there was any resistance. I had already cleaned the area, but there was some extra white lithium in the right lug area that I missed. I grabbed some q-tips and went to work. Again, bolt placed into receiver sans oprod, tiped receiver, slid home with no issue. Oprod replaced sans spring/spring guide. Tiped again, with no resistance. Trigger/stock replaced, and resistance at 'bolt to the rear' position.
Previous Norc bolt was never headspaced, but the left lug was quite sloppy and I'd rather have it as a spare than what I actually use regularly. I believe the seller had said he had 2 more, lol

Here comes the onslaught of PM's!

Another option is to fire a couple rounds and send me your brass, I can measure your headspace with my case gauge. It will only cost u 2 bucks postage in an envelope.

In almost all cases, dropping a TRW bolt into a Nork receiver will tighten up the headspace. Just make sure the bolt lugs mate well with the receiver shoulders, may or may not require a bit of lapping.

In 50% of the Nork rifles I've dropped a USGI bolt into, the headspace has been reduced to under SAMMI spec. Usually 1.629, in one notable case 1.625.....

I usually swap Nork for Nork bolts and only utilize a USGI bolt when doing a short chambered blank.... But that has more to do with the cost and "scarcity" of good USGI bolts!

My $.02
