Makes sense when you hear it, but its always easy to get caught up at looking at a new piece in the store.

Have been looking at getting into a handgun lately and intended to go the glock route. good price point, huge user group, seemed like a good first pistol (and I'm sure many people are happy with them) that would allow me to try target and ipsc etc.

Was out at the range the other day and got a chance to try a glock 17, sig 226, and a s&w 1911 back to back. My fiance impressed me on the trip as I started her out on a ruger .22 and before I knew it she was pointing at the 9mm to have a go, and then the .45, pretty good for her first time out.

Fit wise they all fit me pretty good. the sig probably the best, and the 1911 was maybe a bit thin for my hands. but when shooting I just could not get used to that glock trigger. maybe its something you learn to love, but after firing the 3 in sucession I find myself deciding between a sig 226 or a 1911, with glock nowhere in the picture. Trigger wise I think the 1911 was just a tad nicer, maybe more crisp, but both felt way more comfortable than the glock. I'm sure each trigger can be worked on to some degree, but that long squeeze of the glock trigger was enough to put me off.

just a good reminder that on paper things can make sense, but if you get the chance, trying before buying can be very informative.

on a side note the ruger with a red dot on it was actually a lot of fun to shoot

Your experience with the above pistols is typical of a new or inexperienced shooter. The trigger "issues" you mention with the Glock are directly related to ones ability to execute proper trigger control and work the reset. Regardless, it never hurts to play with/try before you buy.

if you're shooting a lot, IMO the SIG 226 pistols will be the best choice in 9mm !
I'm not a big fan of external extractor in SW 1911, I prefer the classic features of original COLT 1911 models.
my personal choice in 1911 are Kimbers, one of the tighter and out of the box accurate pistols...
Kimber 1911 is my top range work horse in 45ACP!

Kimber also commands a similar price tag to its performance level.;)

With pistols like glocks you need to set up the trigger just before you're actually ready to fire. You pull it back just far enough until you feel more resistance. Then aim properly at which point its a very short and fairly crisp trigger pull. Imho you need to be a bit more of a experienced shooter to shoot glocks and similar pistols accurately.

not new to shooting, but new to handguns I guess.

I'm not saying that the glock trigger is hard to manage or figure out its reset, I didnt notice major accuracy differences between the pistols, everything held nice tight groups. I'm just saying that I found the trigger on the other two to feel a lot nicer, enough that I'm looking at the sig now. Each to his own

I also dont really fall into the camp of "its a plastic pistol" quality felt fine and I have no doubt its durable, seems like a great gun for the price, theres a reason everyone has one.

saying that a more experienced shooter would find it fine is a little short sighted, everyones going to have personal preferences when it comes to grip/feel/trigger, just thought I'd remind people to find theirs.

I love my glock17. In fact along with my 1913 1911 it's the only pistol I'm keeping until I'm done moving.
The triggers are very different, but both can be very crisp and smooth.
Having said that, I have installed in my glock the lightest possible trigger a glock can have.

Would not really go wrong with any of them from those pics. As far as you get what you pay for, yes and no. Glock is a pretty hard gun to beat for over all performance. Is it the most comfortable and accurate, no, SIG is generally a more accurate gun and built tighter, for and feel are good. 1911, well what can one say, when you buy a good one, the fit is always good, nice and tight, very accurate. Flip a coin if you like them all.

you mean the button in your lane takes the targets further out? I thought you just touched the gun to the paper and pulled the trigger :p

these round of targets were out in the 25 feet range, so not very far out. Most of my other targets were peppered with shots from my fiancee as she wanted to try them all too. Definitly fun to get to try them back to back and compare

So you're saying its the shooter that makes the shot, not the gun?! Get the hell out! Who knew!!
:D
