I've been tossing around the idea of picking myself up a nice .308 for some fun shooting, hopefully out to 1000 someday!

I was going to go with the 700P but have now started to really look at the Tikka Tactical with 24" barrel (I know, I know, the xtra money over the varmint for just a different stock and scope rail :onCrack: )

I think the Tikka is around $1600 right now, so what I'm wondering is how much would I actually have to pay for a custom built .308 based on a Remington 700 action or similar. I have absoluetly no idea about custom guns or even who would build one. Do you guys have any ideas how much I would have to pay, where I could get such a gun, what the benefits would be over the Tikka Tactical or 700P, and is all the fuss going to be worth it.

The only other gun I was interested in is the new Savage with detachable magazine and HS stock. I saw a posting on CGN awhile ago but why isn't the gun on the Savage website yet?

Almost forgot, I'm not really interested in any of those funky looking future guns....trying to keep it simple and looking like a normal gun.

I can't understand the facination people have for the Tikka Tactical. It's reportedly accurate by the standards of their owners but I certainly wouldn't pay $1,600 for a rifle with a stock that is as flimsy as a standard Savage FV stock.

Why not buy the 700P for $900-$1,000 and a new MacMillan A-5 (fully adjustable version) for $800-$900, and then sell your take off 700P stock for $300? Total investment is between $1,400-$1,600 with say $100 for a gunsmith to pillar bed the stock.

With this route you even get to pick the colour(s) of the stock and it's fill weight. It's far easier to customize this package compared to the Tikka. The future re-sale may likely be better as well.

food for thought...

New Remington SPS rifle with 308 boltface ~$550 (Sell barrel and stock to recover some costs)
Boyds or Richards Microfit tactical style stock ~200
Gaillard custom 30 cal Barrel $375 inc shipping
Gunsmithing, including chamber, action blueprinting and trigger job ~450
Bedding and finishing stock ~150+

= one very skookum, tack-drivin' custom 308

I think most gunsmiths you'll find will tell you that Remington actions will all benefit greatly from accurization and from stock bedding. If this is an option you want to explore, I can put you in touch with a gunsmith that will do the work.

All said and done for my old burned out .243 to become a custom 6mmBR was $1400. I put a heavy MacKlennan barrel that was turned, chambered, trued, cut, crowned, rifled and threaded into the old reciever for $700.

The original cost of the donor 243 was $575. I was told by Rob that the barrel looked like a stovepipe, so it wasn't going to net me anything. I sold the stock for $100 and the bipod that came with it $100. So my action cost $375 if you want to factor that in. The jewell trigger and wolf spring and Choate Ultimate Sniper Stock were the other add ons.

You could factor in the price of rings and bases and optics, but you are going to get these for whichever rifle anyway. These prices all include taxes. My new 6 shoots better than my .243 ever did. Robs barrels don't foul much, but.....BUT.....be prepared to wait. almost 10 months later I got my rifle back.

My club raffled off a Tikka Super Varmint last year.
We looked at the Tactical, but it was more money , and with the exception of the rail, was basicly the same rifle but the stock is a tad different .
The Tikka owners I have talked to tell me they prefer the Tikka action to the Remington.
The Remington owners I have talked to do not like the stock on the Tikkas.
Both are accurate rifles.

one thing with Tikka is that some gunsmiths wont fix any problems you may have with the gun. you would have to send it off to Tikka company for repairs..
I would stay away from that kind of headache.. although they are great company.. just in case..
if i was you my friend, id go for the remington CDL in either .308 or 30-06. its $1100 dollars roughly and its amazing! i have one, and alot of fun to shoot, looks great, feels great, and the recoil pad is amazing. i shot 50 rounds with 150gr bullets, and didnt feel a thing. Its my opinion, some that know more may argue with what im saying, but just keep it in mind.
cheers.

My 700P with a tuned trigger, bedded and floated was $1150 and I'd be willing to bet it can shoot just as well or better than a stock Tikka.
PM inbound.

Actually yes.

Rohann, really? Based on your wealth of experience, I'm sure...

I would in no way claim MY LTR was the answer to all of my shooting needs. It's a great, realatively light weight rifle (for being a HB) and would easily satisfy most of what I use a bolt action rifle for. However, I wouldn't claim it to be the answer to everything, though it would easily be my choice if forced to have only one bolt action rifle.
