Trying to decide on a 1911

Can't say about the specific Springfield u r considering but I own a Fully Loaded SS and I love it. The only bad thing about it is how sharp the slide serrations are. They give me deep scratches when I Tap/Rack. Got to see to that if I ever compete with it again.

For the money vs value:

STI Trojan/Springfield Loaded, the difference in price over the Spartan is nothing when you consider the gun is going to last you a lifetime.

For a build:

Norinco it comes with reasonably decent sights. (My choice over any of the Mil Spec guns. all of which come with useless sights IMHO)

Take Care

Spartan here too. Love it.

I was shooting next to a guy with a Para gi,what a peice of crap! It was his first gun not just handgun but first gun and he was having all kinds of problems! I tell he was getting pissed off with it so i lent my 1911 to shoot. Saw him again he said he returned it and bought a colt. 100 rounds or so and he had 10-15 failure to feeds and a half dozen FTE and thats all i saw while watching. Me personally id go with the kimber out of the 3. But stay away from the gi and you cant go wrong

I would look into the STI Spartan. I have a Para GI Expert, and I got a couple ftf at around 1100 rounds. Hadn't cleaned it for about the last 600, and the series 80 firing pin block was gummed up something fierce.

Other than that the gun has been good. The finish blows though, so be aware of that. Scratches/wears easily.

I have read bad things about Kimber, but have never owned or shot one so that comment is really worth nothing.

Of the three on your list? Springfield probably.

Are you wanting series 80 or 70? Classic lines or not? I like the simple serrations on my GI expert. I just wish the finish was better. Might have to armacoat it.

Edited to add: full length guide rods are over hyped. The classic setup is fine.

Of the three - the Spartan. Kimbers are subject to iffy QC and Para's are junk and Springfield's are scarce. Springfield's warranty support invovles sending them the gun, in the US. STI has terrific product support in Canada, by an importer who supports the shooting sports 100 per cent and the gun itself has terrific reviews everywhere.

Take a look at the SAM 1911's from Wolverine I got the Commander and it is really well made..shoots great has a 4140 stainless barrel which gleams and sells for $495.00. I am taking it up to the range to try some reloads on Sunday. Range report to follow.

STi Spartan over a Springfield GI..

The Springfield GI will have a OD finish at least from the one I've seen and will be bone stock.

The STi Spartan will have a ton of extras on it & feels nice in the hand. right from the get go you will be pleased if you like 1911's.

as for the Kimber, it's my opinion that the STi Spartan is as good a gun as the Kimber but will cost you hundreds less.

I have owned a STi Spartan before & sold it now I really miss it. I will be replacing it with 2 Spartans one in 9mm & 45acp. You will be very happy you bought one.

+ 1 for the Spartan.

Sold mine in a weak moment, regretted it. The most accurate 1911 I have owned, and that includes two Seies 70 Gold Cup's. Would shoot POA all day, tiny, tiny groups. Great trigger, 100% reliable, standard 1911 but with all the extras - F/O front sight, adjustable rear, beavertail.

So I have been looking for another 1911 and have looked hard ! I'd like a top end gun but can't afford it, which leaves the budget end.

Had a Para 14-45 in the past. Never really liked it but in two years it never malfunctioned in any way.

Looked at a Remington R1 Enhanced but really didn't like the finishing, particularly on the frame. Did look well equipped, but $100 more than the Spartan, and it's a series 80 which I didn't want. (Nice grip panels !)

To cut a long story short, I am getting another Spartan from ARMCO. It'll come properly prepped and I have no doubt it will be a top notch firearm that I won't regret buying.
