Trying to decide - Savage Mk2 or Cz452?

I was just browsing the CZ site... Any thoughts on the 452-FS? It just kind of caught my eye..

Full Stock? Love the look, hate the balance....but that's me. The gun has to fit you, so asthetics and old world charm aside, its gotta work for you.

If you're really jambed up on this, head out to the local range, buy some coffee's and ask try a few!

Wow!... I must admit that I didn't expect to buy what I did, and when I did... I went looking around for these 2 rifles today, and hunted high and low for the MKII and some CZ's...

All I could find was a MKII with a thumb hole stock, which fit like a glove btw.

I saw a couple of CA Americans and Varmints, but that didn't help too much because I wanted something that shipped with iron sights, because I really don't want the hassle of mounting fore and rear sights, nor can I really afford the cost.

SO... in the first shop I stopped at, I had looked at some used rifles, and saw one I kind of fancied... but decided not to act quite yet. I really wanted a look at some CZ's. I called 4 or 5 more places to see if ANYONE had a CZ-lux or standard, or FS in stock.. and no one did.

Then I got thinking about the used little number I saw... so I went back to store #1.... and had another look... and looked a little longer....

Well.... I am now the owner of a 1958 BRNO #5 with Redfield Olympic front sight and Parker Hale rear peep, and a SUPER light trigger.

I hate temptation. I hate payday.

I do however love the #5 and I love my girlfriend for pitching in a couple hundred as my early birthday present (13 more days! Woot!)

Thanks everyone for the really good advice!! I really appreciate it! And I think you guys really sold me on the CZ/Brno's. I was originally leaning towards the MK II, but you've all convinced me the little extra $$ is going to be worth it ;)

I can post pics if you'd like, but I'm jonesing to get to the range right now :)

Savage rimfire is made in Canada. I have a HB model with which I shoot 200 yards target.

A Lakefield by any other name is still a Lakefield and a polished turd is just that...a turd.

I have a pre-Accutrigger MkII BV and the only thing I'm impressed with is the pepper laminate stock. I'm simply underwhelmed by the rest of it. Hind sight being 20/20, I should have bought the CZ that I wanted in the first place instead of buying it now. I would have saved myself considerable money and time in the process.

brno

congrats on the find, in the long run you won't be disapointed:D
post pictures of the girlfriend holding the rifle:evil:

Its great to hear that you're breaking your girlfriend in early. You can't start teaching them to buy you guns too soon!

Just to confuse things....

Savage also makes this in .22

MarkII-BTVS.jpg

Stainless heavy barrel
Laminated thumbhole stock with a wide beavertail forend
Savage AccuTrigger, easily adjustable from approximately 2 1/2 to 6 lbs
Chambered in 22 LR
Scope bases installed
MSRP $407

I have one in .17 and .223, and there is something about the thumbhole stock that points naturally (for me anyway)

Worth looking at if you can find one.

I like the design of the Savage accu-trigger and the ease of adjusting the trigger pull. I own a CZ452 Silhoutte and I also like the CZ a lot BUT the trigger does have an inconsistent "creep" which I am removing by installing an after market sear (that a friend of mine put in his to do the same earlier this year).

When I say "inconsistent", I mean that as the creep is sometimes there, and sometimes not. With a trigger pull of 2.5 lbs, I like it to break clean and crisp and with the factory sear, this doesn't always happen. I know 2 other friends who both have CZ's and they have the same issue with their pieces.

Did you try the Brooks trigger kit for your CZ. It smartened my trigger right up and cost me less than $20 in my mailbox. Installed easily, too.

I tell you what gentlemen, in 3p matches it doesn't matter if its Savage or CZ, its a shooter and good trigger that makes the score. I have Savage MkII HB and I outshoot CZ's and Anchuts all the time. Of course if one puts guns in a wise and then compare the two it will come down to ammo choice, but not rifles themselves I think.

I don't know there 22. I have a Savage, a CZ and a Browning. That CZ will outshoot any other rifle she's pitted up against. Although I'm not a pro nor do I shoot in tourny's. But I do like group testing it and others off a standard bag rest, no vice. It will shoot better with any ammo I've tried yet. I'm a believer.

I don't know about "out shooting", but certainly shooting on par with the CZ's and Anschutz is our experience at Burlington too. The Juniors section has Savage Mrk II BV, BVTSS and Cub T's that are holding their own against 1900's, 2300's and older 191/171 Anschutz. Initial results are very encouraging.

And the $1-1.5K price difference buys an awful lot of ammo.

QUOTE=Airborn_69;1701035]The 452 is so far the best bang for the buck$ when it comes to accuracy in a rimfire..[/QUOTE]

How do you determine that? Is paying $2-300 more for a 0.1" reduction in group size worth it? Probably. For a 0.01" reduction? Maybe. For a 0.001" reduction? Probably not. I guess it depends on your circumstances and requirements.

Great thread guys. Lots of great info. About to list my 1022 and a Marlin 39a. The Marlin outshoots the 1022 by a lot but is awkward on a rest for me. The CZ452 was going to be my next choice in a leftie but the Savage was tempting. The better quality thing is a large deal too. I would like to buy one 22 and get on with my life. I will check the ee but not likely to find a leftie. I will scope it with a lovely little Nikon 4x with killer optics and go out and have some serious fun. This answers a lot of my questions- now I go to look and fondle. Happy shooting guys and those of you that hunt-good luck!

I think common consent on the board is that the CZ's are a little more accurate, but by how much? And do the differences *really* justify the extra $150 to $200 (as the increased price seems to be going mostly into the wood stock)? Lastly, would either of these actually perform well in competition or will I simply be shelling out for an Anshutz in a few years?

Honestly? After owning numerous quality .22 rimfires European and American, I would recommend starting off with the Savage/accutrigger, mount some quality glass and then try all the different ammunition you can get your hands on! IMO .22 rifle accuracy potential is limited mostly by the crude nature of the ammunition.
But by way of comparison I have a scoped Marlin 25 which loves cheapo "American Eagle" 38gr and groups .5" @ 50yds consistantly. (I paid $175 for it.)

Its good to remember that while the humble .22lr is the best selling caliber of all time, (and for good reason!) we are not talking about a jacketed bullet- and to create the precision accuracy we would all like is generally cost prohibitive. (If precision on a budget is your goal, look into .17HMR..)

So handle a few rifles, see what fits you best and just enjoy the sport of shooting, regardless of the latest and most popular rifle of the moment..

These are my own opinions formed from rangetime and ownership- your experience may vary. ;)

Well, I went and looked at the CZ452 today and it sure looks to be well made. Fit and finish are hands above the lowly Savage but then a lot of that will depend on when it was made too. What I am seeing and what I will go with is the CZ quality. Feels good and for the extra money I am fairly certain that it is worth it. People in the shop own all sorts of 22s too but either the CZ or Anschutz or BRNO etc seem to rule as well as on the range. The CZ seems to be comfortably in the middle price wise and comes in lefties.IMHO of course.

i own and shoot an old Cooey 75...long barrel, single shot, slow loading , 3x9x bushnell scope and loves getting laughed at. When the hundred yard targets are pulled, the laughing stops. The questions arise of what ammo I shoot? how powerful is the scope? What kinda gun is it? IMO the accuracy comes from knowing your gun, (comes from many, many boxes of shells...the cheapest)...laying or benching whenever you can, and relaxing, knowing your skill and never letting what someone else tells you affect your concentration. I have fun and every gun has its great points and bad, learning to deal with these, and not coveting what everyone else has. Shooting the best you can, with what you have, is reason to be proud in this wonderful sport.

Assuming you keep it and take care of it, your grandchildren will enjoy shooting it!
