Hey all !!!

So im getting a custom hunting/target rifle made by a local gunsmith in 7mm-08. I have been trying to find actions to go with and am having one hell of a time trying to decide which way to go or even what i want. All I know is I want a detachable magazine in a short action. I have been trying to find new Remington 700 actions but the ones i do find are in the states and do not have the detachable option. If i want the detachable it looks like im stuck with a long action rifle. Ive tryed finding an old used rifle to go with that i can steel the action off and possibly the stock but to try and save money but still no luck with that. The only thing i have found is an Remington Model 788 in .308 which i think would be good and the .308 detachable mag should fit the bill perfactly for the 7mm-08... problem is i have no clue what condition the action is in and since the gun is online i cant just go for a drive and take a look...

So what do u all think would be a good action to go with? im not looking at spending 600 before tax..

Remington 700(detacable magazine) or 788
Savage
or a tikka or sako action( probably hard to find for cheap)

Looked at Mauser style but again.. hard to find one with a detachable mag.

thanks again for all your help..
Josh

A Rem 700 with a Kwik-Klip, available in short action 308 size or long action 06 or Standard Magnum size.

I built my 7mm08 on a long action so bullet choice and magazine length is never a problem and it leaves more options in the future...

The difference in weight between a short action 700 and a long action 700 is less than 1.5 ounces.

"...that I can steel..." It's already steel.
"...not looking at spending 600..." Good luck. Trying to build a custom rifle on the cheap is a wate of yoyur time. Most guys buy as rifle just for the action. Not exactly the cheapest way, but sometimes it's the only way. You might find a used Win M70. Epp's is listing one, currently a .30-06, at $525.
A lot depends on where you are. If you wait a month or so, deer season will be over and a lot of guys sell their rifles.
"...trying to find actions..." Very few U.S. manufacturers sell just actions. Savage is the one exception. Not exactly cheap though.

Have you considered a chassis? The MDT TAC-21 and LSS are available for Rem700 SA and allow you to use detachable AICS mags without needing a separate bottom metal. I have heard people say that the .308 mags will work for 7mm-08, but I've never tried myself.

Wolverine Supplies has some 700 actions in stock. http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/products/firearms/parts.aspx?addFilter=Action&filterValue=Bolt

Alternatively you could try Mystic Precision or ATRS.

Thanks all for the replies!!! i have looked at the Wolverinesupplies and like what i seen.. This is my first custom build so am new to this and trying to get everything lined up proves to be no walk in the park when trying to find everyhting u need lol

Tiriaq. Im hoping to have a rifle that will give me close or match accuracy that i can carry on a moose hunt.. The barrel ordered is a Ted Gailard(spelling).. I belive its a number 5..(700 thow finish) and will be complete at 24". The action to me looks and sounds like my best option is a model 700 unless i can find something else.. the problem im running into is finding a stock to match an action. seems remington has everythign and every aftermarket maker has something for a 700 action.... I do want the stainless so it does match the barrel. The stock is most likely going to be a boyds and a Timny trigger to finish it off. Something that i hope will be around the 6 -8 lbs mark with scope and well ballanced.

There are different detachable magazine systems for the 700. The factory system requires a dedicated receiver. The aftermarket systems will work with any 700 receiver. For a true custom rifle, I would not use the factory DM.

Thanks! Sask Hunter.. If the weight of the gun in a lil more than antisipated no big deal. ill look around and see what there is for other options out there for stocks. But boyds are hard to beat for quality and cost.
Titiaq.. thanks and i will talk to my gunsmith see where he gets his supplies and go from there.

A num 5 barrel will weigh very close to 4 1/2 lbs all by itself.
Action 2 lbs , scope & mounts 1lb +,, and then a stock will never make 6-8 lbs.
you will need a smaller contour me thinks??

hahaha sorry about the spelling and grammar. sometimes my figures are faster than my brain hehe.

Well i got the action ordered. its a 700 SS. short action.. all i need to buy is the bottom plate ADL or BDL.. hummmm ?
Detachable mag would be nice but I've come to terms and an internal will work if need be.
As for the weight.. I'm coming to understand that I'm closer to a 9 lbs gun and possibly more... I've been told that the barrel is a 700 thou finish.. maybe i got my numbers mixed up.. ? its in between a regular barrel and a heavy target barrel.
The mounts and rings will be Tally... either or its my first build and its a very fun process and i thank all for giving there advice.. it sure helps me make a final decision on what i want or which way to go.

Thanks again so so so much!!
Josh

a #5 barrel is pretty hefty. i have a #5 on a 375 and its not too bad as its heavily fluted. la 700,h&s stock talley rings and vx11 weighs 8lb 11oz. would likely be over 9lbs without fluting. a little hefty for a 7 08.
