Trying to get bullet holes to cut cleanly in paper

A box of file folders is pretty cheap ...tear in half so you get two “sheets” out of each folder. Use a washer and felt marker to make your target dots.

Here it is against the law to take anything from recycling boxes.

That may be so, but I'd put money on it that THE MAN'S Agent would leave it at "please don't".

Grocery Stores are a good source of boxes, most other stores as well.

Canadian Tire sells Coreplast similar in size to small election signs, and the local dollar store sells pretty much the same thing made of foam.

after the election pick up a bunch of the signs, put your paper on them. Works for me

First thing on my to do list for Tues morning. :)

Edit: When I measure my groups I usually just eyeball the centres of the two holes. When I do bother to measure from outside to outside and do the math, I find I'm usually off by less than .005"

Spray the targets with a quick drying , clear laquer. Might take two coats. Let it dry thoroughly and blaze away.
I think it was Kleinguenther rifles which came with a test target which was obviously cut with a punch. Targets with the Golden Eagles were made by a bullet but there were powder burns on the target.

You are supposed to measure from outside to outside of the black ring left by the bullet as it passes thru the paper.

Benchrest group targets have been measured like this for years.

Using a backer of some sort, like coroplast helps as well.

Outside to outside measurement subtracting the actual hole size is an accurate way. Some use bullet diameter but actual hole size is sometimes different than bullet diameter.

Ellwood Epps (site sponsor) carried targets made by Cadwell (?). They are a thick plastic product and holes made in them are not torn/shredded at all, very neat, perfect holes. I think they were intended for bench rest shooters, 2 circles, 1 square. Nice targets.

Does putting a single layer of wide scotch tape over the target help?

I actually tried this a few years ago (back before getting married when I had more time...), using clear packing tape. It didn't work as well as I had expected.

It did improve wet weather target gathering/measuring, which might have been why I tried it, come to think of it... winter shooting here in BC usually involves moisture at some point...

Dollarama sells big, heavy white cardstock sheets for 50 cents a piece. You can make lots of different types of targets with them with stickers, paint or marker. Bullets cut through them really nice.
