Oakland, CA (AHN) - California Highway Patrol officer Brent Clearman died on Sunday from injuries he suffered when he was hit Saturday by a speeding driver on Interstate 880 in Oakland. Clearman was called a ``spit and polish discipline'' man who spent his whole life trying to fulfill a deep desire to help people and keep them safe.
Clearman a decorated U.S. Marine Corps sharpshooter in Iraq before joining the CHP two years ago was the seventh officer to die at work since September.
Clearman, 33 died late Sunday morning at Highland Hospital in Oakland. On Saturday night, a hit-and-run driver struck him at 10:35 p.m. on the 66th Avenue on-ramp to northbound Interstate 880 when he had left his patrol car to investigate a minor crash on the left side of the ramp.
Clearman, is survived by his wife, Cathy Jo, in Concord.
The investigation into the accident is in progress as the CHP was looking into whether one of two vehicles may have been involved in the incident.
The Mercury News writes that CHP has ordered a statewide search for a champagne-colored Buick LeSabre, model year 1992 to 1998. The LeSabre is now missing its Buick hood ornament and has significant damage to the grille on the driver's side.
The second vehicle, a silver 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, has been located Sunday night, and its driver was taken into custody. CHP spokesman Officer Mike Wright said that the Pontiac had been stolen during a carjacking near the site of the hit-and-run only minutes before.
Investigators were interviewing the Pontiac driver Sunday night to see if the vehicle was involved in the hit-and-run
After he was hit, Clearman was taken to the trauma center at Highland Hospital in Oakland, where doctors worked all night to save him. He died Sunday morning, police said.
His supervisor, Capt. James Leonard said,``The medical staff at Highland did everything humanly and medically possible to save him. And I'm told that Brent fought.''
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a statement Sunday on Clearman's death that said, ``Officer Clearman exemplified that commitment and courageously made the ultimate sacrifice.''
