I just got a Norinco 213 (9mm Tokarev). I took it to the range today for the first time. First shot I feel a stinging on the web of my hand and I look down to see blood forming. Apparently I need to grip it slightly lower. Other than that I love the gun..
Same here, I actually lost a lot of skin and got blood all over my other pistols while shooting. I'm stubborn and wasn't going to let it ruin my day at the range. I am not sure if a bigger grip will solve much. I grip the gun high and holding it lower feels wrong and opens up my groups. I figure shaving a bit off the back end of the hammer is the best solution. Typically I'd just sell a gun with this issue but the thing is surprisingly accurate and 100% reliable so I'd like to keep it.
Shaving off the hammer won't solve the problem. At least it didn't for me. You need to shave off the lower edge of the body below the hammer enough that it can't grab your hand when the recoil is pushing the firearm down on to the web, The part of the hammer you need to shave off would be along the shaft and not just the rounded top. Even then you'll still want to take that sharp edge off of the body below the hammer. My Zastava M57 had a larger gap between my hand and that junction so I never had this problem. To bad it was so unreliable and not that accurate. I still have my TT-33's and wear gloves when shooting them.

Because for the life of me, I can't see how the hammer even comes close to the web of my hand. Not close at all.

Beats me too. Some people must have really fat hands. Same with the Walther PPK, never gives me any trouble.
Edit: My only explanation would be absence of recoil control.

Do not modify your hammer, you'll get light primer strikes if you do. May not be a problem with modern ammo, but surplus. forget about it.
Toks like any early semi auto were made to be operated one handed and with elbow bent. If you practice holding it one handed, you'll never get hammer bite.

I have big hands, the grip is almost too short so I grip it high to compensate. You can see here that my hand contacts the hammer when it's cocked. The hammer comes down even farther when the gun cycles which is causing the bite. Sounds like my only option is to try an aftermarket grip or change how I'm holding it.
OK, my grip is like the Soviet guy above, clearly there is much biological variation. I have big hands, I can decock a Browning Hi Power with my finger in the magwell, most people can't. Nature has given me gunfighting hands

I have never actually seen extended floorplates for the mags in real life, maybe that would permit a lower grip:

Changing my grip is the simplest solution. Unfortunately it also doesn't feel right and my groups aren't nearly as good. My first mag through the gun I landed 8 rounds into a small ragged hole at 15m. That's the only reason I am looking to keep it, I can't say I was expecting that from an old surplus pistol and ammo.
i do not have large hands but guess what could be described as meaty but i had to pay attention with the stock grips
they really were designed for mittens lol
anyway the above mentioned slide on positions your fingers into a comfortable hold and really give solid purchase
pistol feels loads better in the hand and changes the distance from the hammer greatly
