I just got my tt-33 and started cleaning the heavy grease when i noticed the barrel has a lot of surface rust all along the lands. I cleaned it out with mineral spirits and the solvent using brushes/patches and the rust is still there so its not cosmo.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Take a .30 cal bore brush wrap some 0000 steel wool on it. Then put a lubricant of some sort on there and run it through a couple of times. It should remove the surface rust. I would discard the .30 cal brush afterwards.

Are you talking about pitting or actual red rust? If its pitting, you are stuck with it cause the soviets chromed the barrel during refurb. If you see something red orange in there try copper remover.

Might be copper from the test fire. If it doesnt come out with solvent, i wouldn't worry about it cause the bullet wont care. The chrome plating it pretty tough but steel wool wont do it any favors.

No pitting, just red staining along the lands.

Wont the steel wool take same chrome with it?

Maybe it's just copper fouling. Did you use a good copper solvent? i.e.: Butch's Bore Shine, Hoppes Benchrest, Sweet's 7.62, or KG12

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it too much. More damage is done by overzealous cleaning then corrosion.
