Tube question

It would depend on the loading mechanism. My Marlin 990l loads like a mauser and the cartridge is held against the bolt by the extractors, then inserted into the chamber. many other styles push the cartridge up into the chamber in a sliding motion. like the Cooey 64 and Mossbergs 151. I imagine the mauser style would cycle even upside down.

Why, are you planning on shooting in Australia?

With some butt-fed tube semis, the bullet essentially jumps from the magazine into the chamber.

No plans on shooting anything down-under just yet. :)

I was thinking of ways to make an ambidextrous bullpup in .22lr, and using a tube above the barrel with bottom ejection came to mind. Maybe with a nice big brass catcher, too?

It's not really convenient for anything other than rimfire, because the loading port would be way too far back.

I'm really just thinking out-loud.

I had a Winchester pump model 1906 that was growing grey hair and the tube feed was working just fine even though the barrel was shot out. You know how much shooting it takes to shoot out a 22 barrel?? Whoa thats a lot.

How reliable are tube-fed semi-auto rimfire rifles when upside down (horizontally)?

I tried this stunt with my Marlin 981T, tube fed bolt-action.

15 rounds in the tube. 8 fed/ejected inverted. 4 F/E when on its left, 3 F/E when on its right. No issues with feeding, chambering or ejecting.

The bolt controls the cartridge, holding it firmly against the bolt face, aligned with the chamber always, as it leaves the magazine tube, throughout its loading, firing and ejecting cycle. The bullet head doesn't touch anything but rifling, so it is not deformed, contributing somewhat to accuracy or consistent groups.

If the 60 has the same magazine and bolt design, then it should be as reliable as the 981T. Too bad my 60 is still enroute or I could have told you today.

I think he was talking about fabricating a custom action/stock, not building a bullpup stock. Ground-up bullpups are ok, as demonstrated by the Tavor et al.

Hence the reference to a general action/magazine type rather than a specific model :p

Yes.

It's not really a project, just some daydreaming. Who knows if it ever materializes?

Thank you again, easyrider604.
