The magazine on this SKS will only hold 3 rounds but that may be indicative of my ongoing problem.

The top round in the mag fires after jiggery - pokery to get it into the tube and ejects , but the second round will not chamber. The follower holds the rounds at an angle , with the bullet pointed down with the tip 1/8" +- below the top of the magazine , and zero clearance. The bolt hits the top cartridge base and simply drives the bullet against the front of the magazine . There is no feed ramp at the entry point of the chamber either.

Also regarding the 3 round magazine capacity : is it not proper to shorten the 5/16" round stock that extends below the follower , and if not , why not ?

I've searched the red rifle section and can find nothing on this subject . Surely someone else must have seen this problem .

Sounds like you mag it's boogered up somehow. Make sure your follower pivots freely. It is also perfectly acceptable to shorten that pin if it only holds three rounds. Anyone near you with a mag you can try?
 
It does sound like your magazine follower or spring is damaged somehow. Have a look at some other SKS to get an idea and let us know how it turned out for you.
 
Some of them were pinned badly, and it royally f@cks everything. If your magazine only holds 3 rounds, it's indicative that whoever pinned it was a bit too deep into the Vodka that day. It happens.

If you got it from a reputable dealer, get in touch with them, they'll probably have a replacement mag around somewhere. Sure, the numbers won't match, but odds are that's a fudge anyway - most of the mags have been re-numbered to match the receiver.

If you got it off a private deal, ask around. Good chance someone nearby will have one they aren't using after giving their SKS the CrapCo treatment and swapping out for detachable mags.
 
My apologies to all you "post critics" but this is now a double post. The problem was indeed the pin being put in so tight there was no swiveling at all. Eventually tapping with a hammer forced the follower to point in the right direction and end of problem. thanks everyone.

Welcome to the wonderful world of milsurps. If you're not into fixing things, this isn't the hobby for you. Glad you could figure it out.
