Tumbling media

I tried untreated walnut from Pet Smart but found it didn't work well at all. I tumbled for a lot longer and still didn't have clean brass. I've tried mixing it up to 50/50 with Lyman green corncob media and found it works well and really extends the life of the corncob. Now I'm using more of a 70/30 mix for Lyman green corncob/untreated walnut and am liking the results.

I buy a 50 pound bag of walnut from Princess Auto. I think they stock it for some kind of sand blaster media. Cost about $25 a bag. I find it makes brass nice and shiny in about 3 hours. After about 10 cleaning sessions, I toss it and reload with fresh.

I don't use any additives. I don't know if it has any already.

I have found that the Princess Auto walnut grit is really dusty.
Tried the drier sheets; that helped, but still dusty.

Yup, I'm using the pet store walnut. Works great, I mix in a cap full of New Finish and a cap full of Varsol, let it tumble for 10 min then add brass and tumble for 2-4 hours. I've tried without the Varsol and it seems to take longer and doesn't get the heavy tarnish off. So far I've been impressed with the results!

princess auto walnut works for me , a little dusty 1st time through , but if you add dillon cleaner or any of the other ones , incl varsol - new finish , & dryer sheets it's fine .

90percent walnut 10percent Lyman corncob with a capfull of nu finish tumble at least 3 hrs with awesome results.

So when you use this method, are you letting it mix for 3 hours or running your brass for 3? i run brass overnight usually. I had 20 containers of green I got off bargain hunter about 7-8 years ago, now I'm down to 1. so I was thinking of trying other routes.

+1 for the Nu Finish, except that I use 50/50 Lyman's green corn cob and "Zilla Ground English Walnut Shells Desert Blend" (used to simulate a desert environment for your reptiles. Got it off Amazon)
