Tuning a Remington 700?

What are you guys doing to make the Remington 700 the best it can be? I have an ltr in 308 that I’m planning on rebarrelling. I normally wouldn’t buy one of these but it was given to me so we’re going to put it to work.

The older LTR's were a bit better than the newer ones and other than a good quality tube and trigger, that's about all that's needed so long as you find a load it likes. We have built a couple and all have bee rockstars once you find the right load. Pretty sure the HS stocks that they came with were piller bedded so that part is already taken care of. Some receiver bedding probably would't hurt so long as it's done right.

A quality match barrel is the heart of improving accuracy... get this installed properly and you are well on your way to itty bitty groups.

Check bolt receiver contact. newer production 700s improved alot in this department so little work may be necessary to 'true' it up.

Change the factory firing pin spring and put in a WOLFF at factory weight.

proper stress free bedding... like the barrel, it really matters.

Make good ammo using match bullets... the rifle should shoot well.

Ok, so lap the lugs and square the bolt face. I’ll look into the spring and firing pin and see if that’s something I can do myself.

I’m going to get a different person to tune up the action than the barrel. The barrel guy is pretty busy so I’ll get this done first.

For you guys interested in triggers I’ve been using a timney hit set at 15 ounces for the last while. It’s not a benchrest trigger, but great for action sports. In my opinion it breaks just like my Jewell. Only downfall is you can’t adjust the pull weight u less you remove the action from the stock.

I have seen several factory 700's shoot factory ammo into the .300's.

In hunting calibers a correctly trued 700 and a quality barrel will shoot right along with any custom action/rifle and better than some.

It shoots sub moa for sure and I’m sure it’ll be decent, but the 308 in a 20” barrel really isn’t ideal for anything. I figured I’d get any work that needs done before I put a barrel on it.

That’s my sweet spot for barrel length in a .308, 18.5”-20” is perfect.

Don't do anything to the action in the way of "tuning" it unless it is necessary.

I think the f/tr guys are looking for 2650ish with the 200.20x. I was getting 2710 with the 185 juggernaut in a different rifle. I have the 185 jugs listed at 2480 out of my 20” ltr.

The smith that installs the barrel also does the action work... otherwise, leave the action alone and deal with it on the next barrel if necessary.

Or, get the action tuned up first... then ship it for the barrel install.
