I did a quick scan of old posts and didn't see anything like this. I may have asked the wrong question, if so sorry.
So to get to it.
I'm curious to find some details on mods done to M-14/M-305/M1A rifles to improve long range performance. What interests me most is altering the gas system to use slower propellants and heavier bullets. A 208 Match or 200 SMK at 2450 would be cool to experiment with. Just a quick check shows that 2450 is safe in a bolt gun and Hornady's service rifle loads puts 178 Match in that same range. You could also get 2750 fps out of a 175 SMK in a bolt gun with new powders like CFE223. Just shooting a 200 SMK at the same velocity as 175 SMK would be a huge improvement at long range. The only thing to stop you is the gas system (well the barrel too but read on).
Just thinking my next project will be a used plain Norinco. Add a 1 in 10 match barrel with a tight chamber and mod the gas system to safely use slow propellants and heavy bullets if it can be done at a reasonable cost.
Can it?
