I did a quick scan of old posts and didn't see anything like this. I may have asked the wrong question, if so sorry.

So to get to it.

I'm curious to find some details on mods done to M-14/M-305/M1A rifles to improve long range performance. What interests me most is altering the gas system to use slower propellants and heavier bullets. A 208 Match or 200 SMK at 2450 would be cool to experiment with. Just a quick check shows that 2450 is safe in a bolt gun and Hornady's service rifle loads puts 178 Match in that same range. You could also get 2750 fps out of a 175 SMK in a bolt gun with new powders like CFE223. Just shooting a 200 SMK at the same velocity as 175 SMK would be a huge improvement at long range. The only thing to stop you is the gas system (well the barrel too but read on).

Just thinking my next project will be a used plain Norinco. Add a 1 in 10 match barrel with a tight chamber and mod the gas system to safely use slow propellants and heavy bullets if it can be done at a reasonable cost.

Can it?

Just an example of what I'm talking about is having a gas plug made that would convert it to an adjustable gas system, or simpler still buy a handful (or buy a hobby lathe and make them) of gas plugs and drill holes in them of increasing size.

I'm asking here so I don't end up with a pile crap to sort through that a search on google will produce. I hope the guys in the know can give me a nudge in the right direction.

Dlask makes an adjustable gas lock/front sight .

So the first part of the puzzel may be found. I looked at that Dlask Adjustable Gas Lock, I like the front sight mount and may just get it for that reason. It doesn't look like I can adjust the gas pressure with it though. Something like Schuster's Adjustable Gas System is what I'm looking for. If I've understood the gas tube will have to be swaped for a USGI/M1A type due to threads. Has anyone used one? Any thing else I need to know before I buy?

Is it possible to Heli-Coil the gas lock? The kits are a bit pricey but the inserts look pretty cheap. It should be simple to drill and tap the gas lock but would it weaken it too much?

I have one of the Dlask adjustable gas locks on my Norc. He offers 2 versions, Metric and Standard thread pitches. You are correct in that it does not offer any way to adjust gas pressure, but it lets you adjust the tension on the gas system.
Red Shooter. I've been thinking of getting an extra gas plug, then drilling and tapping the end for a small hex bolt, I would then drill the center out of the hex bolts in different sizes until I came up with the "correct" sized gas port. Probably cheaper than buying and wrecking a bunch of as plugs.

Id like to try it out, It'd be nice to be able to use something like Reloader 17, apparently its good for an extra 200fps over most similar powders, but its a low slower burning than the reccommended 4064 as the slowest powder.
Just a thought

How about a 208 Match G1 BC 620 (claimed) at 2450. That's from Hornady's latest manual using W-748. Now that would be a long range load if you had a faster twist tube. I'd settle for a 190 SMK at 2600, an adjustable plug should make that digestable.

I've got a plan, anyone know where I can get some 1030 grade steel wire? About 3/4" diameter by 10" should do the trick. Maybe drill rod will do it.

I need to get my Complete Bladesmith book back! It gives you all the common sources for stuff like that.

If only I had a Mill, this is going to be a joy to try and do on my drill press.
