Tuning Tripp Cobra mags

Kind of hard to explain without showing. Do not put it in flat. Rather put the barrel/slide in first against the back wall of the box. If your rear sight compresses, then do so. Now ease the grip in. If it is a little off the bottom, that is ok - just as long as the box's slide (that ensures the gun fits inside) will slide across. I am likely not explaining this correctly but hopefully this helps.

I think that paints a pretty good picture. Thanks for the info.

Back to subject as i have another question.
Guys that are reliably feeding .40 out of cobra mags, can i ask which bullet you are using with your OAL?

180 gr RNFP at 1.185.
Anothe factor with the system mags is the little plastic piece of the baseplate which extends up the front of the magazine. If you take a bit off the top of it, you get a bit more compression to play with when putting the pistol in the IPSC Box.

Cool, I have some loaded dummies here to experiment, 200gr campro RNFP
they go from lengths of 1.140'' all the way to 1.180''.
In dry fire environment, loading a mag with the longest ones (1.180''), I can manually cycle 8 rounds in a row without a jam.
So yeah, longer is definatly better for these.

I should also add that that length works in a Trojan and two Edges. Make sure your gun is throated for the longer ammo if you have not done so.

I imagine I should case gauge check and manually check with barrel out of gun?
I did not want to turn this into a gunsmith venture, did you have to get work done on your chamber for your Trojan with 1.185''?

Apparently they come from the factory with the longer throat. When I got mine I just checked it with some ammo I had for the edge and it dropped in fine.

I am using 180 Campros with an OAL between 1.141 to 1.150... I set my caliper at 1.150 when checking and as long as they fit then they are good enough for me. Yeah I know I should get it a bit more consistent but works good enough for me.

I think most STIs have a longer throat. Several guys I shoot with a loading a lot longer than I am for their 2011s - Edges, Executives, etc.

Cool thanks for sharing, once again last night I was messing with chambering dummy rounds from a mag.
I tried a few 1.140'' and they would load correctly 70% of the time, 1 round out of 8 nose dived on me.
With 1.185'', I have now fed all my 8 different mags in a row, without the slightest hiccup.
I even did on purpose on a few occasions to ride the slide slowly until it reaches bullet then let it go. It would feed clunky but still the job got done.

Right now one last issue to settle, after feeding lets say 3-4 rounds, if I drop the mag it will only drop free lets say 3 times out of 4.
When it does not drop, I have experiemented with grips off to see better, there was a round half ejected out of the mag and would rub inside the frame front part. Anyone else get this?
Will try to load 200x 1.185'' for IPSC practice this weekend and try to go thru them without malfunctions.

I had an issue with 9mm Tripp Cobras where they were locking in too low causing nose dives. I had to replace the mag catch with a higher EGW one to fix the issue.

I also run a single stack 9mil, it'S a no brainer, Metalform mags work 110% right out of the box no tuning required.
There is also Dawson Precision, they use metalforms mag body/spring/follower, but slap a DP sticker and have a bigger basepad that barely (but does) fits the box. They are also more expensive.

Check the spacing front and back on the feedlips.

Thanks!
My feedlips weren't parrallel, .345" in the back and .357" in front.
I even closed them up real good in front, .340"ish
Can't wait to live fire, in dry, loaded all 8 mags with dummies, and would drop mag each time i'd cycle a new round in.
64 cycles, 64 clean mag drops!
