I watched Canada in the Rough this AM. Two hunters harvesting Turkeys (they got a big jake) with crossbows. The call they were using was small, but very loud, and seem to get the jakes quite riled up.

What is the spread in price and quality? Are there any notable Canadian makers of these? Is there an equivalent of "foxpro" for turkeys?

Thanks

$19.95 seems reasonable.

The Reminton 710 of turkey calls:D:D
There are a few custom call makers in Ontario myself being one. Others I know off hand are Dilly who I believe posts here and Gobbler Stocker. I have held one of Dillies but not Gobbler Stocker's. Dilly makes a very nice boxcall, Kevin Gobbler Stocker makes pots and I think he may now make a box too. I make both as well as predator and the occasional grunt call.
Price and quality of the CNC storeboughts are similar from company to company with Quaker Boy being the most prolific but not neccassrily the best in quality. They are affordable and sound good enough to fool turkeys but they aren't for the most part something ya'll show folks;)
Custom calls are made from many different types of wood and other material as well as in many different styles to suit both the taste and the need of the hunter.
The longbox is the grandaddy of locator calls being capable of long distance calling that some calls can't do even through high wind and other adverse weather. Loud yelps, soft yelps, clucks, cutts, gobbles and purrs can all be done on a boxcall once you get used to using one. They can be tuned to sound like several different birds all in the same call. The box is my favorite and most of the birds I've taken heard the last sound of thier life comimg from one. A boxcall can be beautifully made from all different woods or it can be made simple and effective. Either way a custom boxcall is a great thing to own and be proud to use. Beware that once you start collecting custom calls you will enter a whole new world of calling:D:D
The friction call is a great call for closeer in calling. Not as loud as the box is capable of but never the less more than enough for early morning calling on the average day. Where the pot shines is in it's ability to make the very realistic purrs and clucks of a hen and the soft tree yelps at flydown. Pots can be made of many different woods and have surfaces made generally of slate glass or metals like aluminum or copper. Slate is the traditional material and it sounds fantastic in a hardwood pot. The wooden pot is meerly the same as the body of a guitar or any other musical instrument in that it amplifies and distributers the sound created by vibration. They are small and fit nicely in a pocket and yes they too can be very nicely made and a prized possesion . I have just started getting into making them and find them fun to make and that sound can be changed quite abit as to rasp pitch and and volume by how they are made;)
Some like to use the wingbone and other suction type calls like the Trumpet. These calls amplify sound made by lip suction. Simple is the wingbone call but it can be very attractivly made and with practice it is extreamly realistic. Practice! Did I mention practice;) There is one on the dash of my old Jeep 24/7 and I often practice on the way to work. The yelps are amasing that can be made on a wingbone. Native Americans were using wingbone calls thousands of years before we ever knew such a thing as a
Turkey exsisted.
Trumpets are pretty much a wingbone made of something besides a wingbone. They are generally very ornate with ivory and exotic woods aswell as fine carving. I make them out of plastic airline and find they sound great;)
Tube calls are esentialy a diaphram call that is stretched over a wooden tube instead of in your mouth. Gonna try my hand at some hopefully before next spring. I'm think'n a coyote howler could be done similar.
Custom or store bought is up to the individual. They all sound good enough to fool a turkey if you are up to doing your part and that is practice no matter what!;)
