Just took my turkey course today. Got a Remmy 870 Express Mag, 28" barrel, mod choke. Don't want to spend a whole lotta cash off the bat. Got full camo from goose hunting. Was wondering if I could get away with a Full Choke (with i could use already and only $20) or should I invest in one of those extra-full turkey chokes. Plan on trying the Remmy Hevi-Shot in 3". I realize I will have to pattern it, but, what is good to start with????
Any suggestions for choke and or ammo???????

The full choke should be fine with that barrel length, you should have no probelms out to 40yrds. I used Rem 3" #5's Turkey loads in my Benelli and they were the best of all the shot size I tried.

If your planning on using Hevishot, you need a Hevishot choke, or you can only use your factory "Mod" Choke. As Bigredd said, Federal Flite control turkey shells are excellent, and will likely work far better than you realize with your factory full choke than any other wad design. And besides, they're less than half the price, and WILL shoot better than hevishot in what you have unless you get a specific choke.
PM Chilly willy, he's got a bunch of turkey chokes, and can likely help you out.

Full choke is fine, but you should pattern your gun with a few brands to see what works best. I use winchester 3" #6 loads in my 11-87.

Fine for what, Hevishot?
I dont think so Blargon... Advice like that can get someone killed, or hurt badly...

He's talking about winchesters xtended range. It's been tested in super full lead chokes and is safe.

But the guy asked about Hevishot...

Yes, they say "full steel" on them, but do not say "full hevishot".
Steel shot is softer, (though very close) to the RC of your shotgun barrel.
Within a few points, which is why they dont allways blow up, but shoot enough steel through your lead full choke, and Ka boom!

Hevishot is much heavier, denser, and harder tham steel. take a look at the constriction of a "Hevishot" choke Vs a or lead choke, .675 is apparently the best...

The real "magic" in today's turkey loads is the granulated buffer material that the shot is housed with in the wad. Its compresses with the movement of the shot and constriction of the choke to "BUFFER" between pellets to reduce deformation and random impacts while inside the bore and choke.

The Federal flight control wads are a reverse theory applied to longer range turkey hunting. The most accepted theory was to strip the wad away from the shot as quickly as possible as not to disturb the shot in flight and "push" through it. But Federal has taken the approach to keep the shot inside the wad longer to focus the distribution of pellets on the target at longer distances. They claim that different size loads have different sized "air brakes" which are the petels that deploy once the wad leaves the choke to maximize the effectiveness. I don't know if this is true or not....YET! I do have reservations on using the flight control wads in heavy foilage and dense cover however....if that wad even catches a small little twig on one corner before the shot is released from it...it could potentially blow the whole shot way off target. This is avoided by stripping the wad from the shot quickly using the ported style turkey chokes like, Gobblin Thunder, Comp N Choke, Rhino and many others. Open feild shootin'...I'm all for the Federals if they pattern well out to 40 yards or more.....but for late season or timber turkeys, I'll stick to my GT .660 & .655 and Winchester Extended Range loads.

From all the articles I've read, all the conversations I've had and practical experience....#6 shot is the clear winner for downing turkeys. The advantages of the "Heavier than lead" shot is that even though your pellet size is small (#6) your still delivering the energy and obtaining penetration equal to that of about a full size greater when compaired to lead shot and you gain in total pellet count and hopefully fuller patterns.

i tried that flight control stuff in my 870 and it didnt pattern very well at all compared to the winchester stuff.

i tried it in x-full, full, and mod. i got the best pattern from modified...

The flight control wad Federal Turkey ammo works best with choke constrictions of .035 to .040 that is full to extra full... no need for radical turkey chokes.
The problem that many have with poor patterning when using Turkey ammo, or any other full wad cup ammo is because they don't clean the plastic out of their barrels. The passage of heavy/full wad cups will foul the barrels and especially the tighter chokes with plastic residue... this residue cannot be removed with regular solvents or with standard cleaning procedures. If you just clean your barrel with regular solvents it will look clean to the naked eye... because the plastic is shiny and virtually invisible.
So what happens is the slower or thinner wad cup ammo will sometimes pattern better than the heavier wad cup and faster ammo as it passes more easily over the sticky plastic residue.
Have any of you fellas used "Sabot solvent" to strip the plastic from your barrels or to clean your turkey chokes?
Probably not... go out and buy a bottle of CVA Sabot Solvent and clean your barrel properly then do some patterning... clean and oil every six to ten shots for the best results.:)

Most turkey stuff now is all marketing bull$hit!

All you need is a shotgun with a full choke and some good lead!

Winchester Supreme Turkey Loads, 1&5/8 oz load.

I use a 2&3/4" #4's...they work like a champ!

I use rem 870 express, ventilator choke with winchester supreme turkey loads 3 1/2 2oz #5.

Here's a shot at 40yrds. There were 87 pellets on the white in the circle, 51 pellets on the bird in the circle.
For a total of 138 in the circle.
