Turkey eyesight is very good....or IS IT???

Turkeys are ####in DUMB birds.

Do they ever go for decoys and calls.

The birds too stupid to ignore it and just gets closer going "gobbbbble gobbbbbbble whats that gobbbbbbbble gobbbbbble get closer gobbble gobbbble" then BANG all over like that.

I wont even turkey hunt with Grandpa or anyone cause there is NO challenge at all.

Never hunted Turkeys eh.

Sounds like your Grandad has a good system down...I hope you've learned from it.
There's ton's of fellas that would trade places with you in a heartbeat.

The turkey depends on eyesight , hearing and the ability to run like hell to survive and escape.
It depends on wether they see it as a threat , and any threat will send them running.
They have no sense of smell ...or very , very little.

Ol' Tom can see you blink ;)

I've always felt that turkeys weren't particularly smart, but rather are very paranoid, and spook easily when confronted with what they perceive as the slightest hint of danger.

Paranoia or very wary , it's their natural " defense" mechanisim.
When I read/hear the news , I see there's alot more people that are a hellava lot dumber than turkey.
There's many critters that come to a decoy..go ahead , set up a blow-up doll somewhere and see what happens.

The smart turkeys are still alive, there are lots of turkeys on this site.
If turkeys are as stupid as you believe,go out to the woods and catch and strangle one by hand.Give me a call when you can do that.
As for shooting any animal with a gun it ain't that hard. Now hand to hand that's tough.

I think the decoys, as ridiculous as they look to the human eye, some how mesmerize a hot tom gobbler and make him believe his fantasy is about to come true with this rather dumb looking bird(decoy).:D

Now that'd make a fun watch! Seeing the look on one guy after anothers face when he reads the note, saying something like "just checking to see if people are as dumb as turkeys or ducks". :)

Cheers

"...turkeys are exceptionally dumb..." True for domestic turkey's, but not wild turkeys. Some of ya'll likely think they can't fly either.

Ha ya I had a group of about 10 of them fly over my car on the highway a couple weeks ago. There are so many around Ottawa right now, but they seem to show up around areas they know they cant be hunted...maybe not so dumb afterall! lol

Turkeys are not intelligent IMO, but an extremely paranoid bird will often come across as elusive and intelligent to a hunter whose trying to bag it.

I don't think their eyesight its really set for detail, its better at picking up movement. Gobblers are so frisky in the spring, they gonna go after anything that looks female!

Try hunting them in the fall, then see if their "stupid".

If you wanna see real stupid come see the Canadian Geese in my fields.

turkeys are exceptionally dumb..
i never understood the whole "hunting a turkey" thing .. especially those who go hardout for it. all camo'd up and buy special turkey shotguns..

i use a .22 and usually get about 15 in a day

correct me if i am wrong, but NZ is a land without predators? here there are many things that would happily make a meal of an unwary turkey, especially during the 5 months of winter when everything is hungry.

my take on turkeys, they are as wary or unwary of people as the hunting pressure allows.

the ones here can fly shockingly far and high for such a big bird.
