It looks like we have had another unfortunate accident during the turkey hunt. Here's a link to a short description in the Toronto Sun.

Let's all be sure of our targets & whats behind them! Stay safe.

I heard about it this morning through a friend that knows him personally... the guy LOST (not may have) an EYE, and has extensive damamge to his face.
Shot by a first time turkey hunter that maybe should have paid attention in his turkey course.

What a god damn idiot, how do you make a mistake like that?? a turkey is a little friggin bird no taller then 2 feet. Was the guy that got shot laying on the ground with decoys strapped to his back? thats the only way i could see this happening.

That guy should be charged with attempted murder or something like that, he pretty much ruined his friends life, loosing an eye would be so brutal.

Honestly, how does this happen. Unless your hunting buddy is a midget dressed up like a turkey, you have to be the dumbest person in the world.

*cough* Cheney *cough*

you people obviously have never hunted turkey with the comments ive read:rolleyes:

the normal method of turkey hunting is to sit on the ground or low stool so your head is pretty much at the same height as a turkey so you dont need to be "2ft tall" or "a midget" to get hit in the face:rolleyes:

at least research turkey hunting on the net before pretending you know what you're talking about;)

accidents happen and im sure the shooter doesnt feel to great about what happened. charge him with attempted murder? you're a liberal arent you? theres a tiny 2 paragraph article about a hunter getting shot and you think he should get charged with attempted murder?

why not wait for the full story before making assumptions?

i wonder if it could be deemd as careless hunting over a decoy......new hunter gets turkey fever shoots at decoy hitting other hunter in face say thirty yards behind decoy in heavy cover?????????? sometimes camoflouge can be to good.

So lets get some safety facts straight (the whole reason for the turkey course)

DO you commonly sit across from each other and shoot at eachother turkey hunting?

So you dont have specific shooting lanes in these types of situations when using one caller, and a TRI/B2B Setup?

So you dont make it a habit of knowing where your hunting partners are While fully dressed in camo especially if they're in your effective range? (within 150 Meters)

Accidents happen, and firearms dont go off by themselves often.

Regardless of your thoughts, it took someone to point a firearm in an incorrect manner (IM sure its in your best interest to re read the 10 commandments of shooting) Never point a firearm at something you do not intend to shoot, and know your target, and what is beyond it... Both apply to hunting, and because Turkeys are hunted a bit different than other big game doesnt make this any different...
I also know of someone that was accidentally shot in the head while waterfowling... It was an accident, and no one intended to hurt anyone, but someone was neglegent, and someone was injured. (luckily minor injuries, but long term)
I dont feel that attempted murder is warranted either, but careless use of a firearm is more than adequate.
We commonly play tic tac toe with birds, and work within 50 yards of eachother, and no one's even come close to being shot...
because when know where eachother are...
This was something obviously missed...
I feel bad for the shooter too, but it doesnt excuse his neglegence

how could anyone be so dumb to mistake a decoy for a turkey??? like honestly its not like your shooting at it 100 yards away, 50 yards or less and if you can't tell if its a decoy in less then 10 seconds there is something wrong wit you.

ANYONE that shoots at something they are not completely sure of what it is, or whats behind it doesn't deserve to carry a gun or hunt for that matter

So I would assume by this dumb statement that there has never been any hunting accidents in your part of the country.

Awesome. I sat in a marsh in Timmins one day and watched some locals whack a bunch of sandhills thinking they were geese. I guess your not all rocket scientists up there.

dont worry, grouseman is the resident jackass know it all professional hunter;)

look at how many people live in southern ontario. the more hunters there are, the more accidents will occur. i thought that even you could figure that one out but i guess i gave you too much credit:rolleyes:

daryl, i wasnt refering to your post, i was referring to the 2 posted above mine.

ive been hit by birdshot in the leg while hunting. a couple guys were shooting ducks at the pond and my father and i were in the bush across from the pond. they started shooting at ducks, i got hit with a few pellets. was it their fault i got hit? no. was it my fault i got hit? no. neither party was doing anything wrong so it was simply an accident.

if these turkey hunters knowingly setup across from each other, its too bad they didnt shoot each other at the same time to thin out a couple more morons that shouldnt be hunting.

theres someonething alot of people have trouble understanding. accidents can happen and its not always someone being negligent.

Hats off to Ontario for implementing this mandatory course for ALL Ontario turkey hunters! This will be my first year hunting wild Turkey and it’s comforting to a good extent to know that everyone out there took the same safety course as I did.
Does this make everyone 100% safe? NO! Does this weed out the #######s and unsafe turkey stalkers in the sport? NO!
With the full camo and being totally still 15 yards from your decoy it’s easy to see how accidents can happen.(not trying to justify such accidents)
The course informs you of the different hunting techniques out there and how to watch for others using them. Without this I’m sure turkey hunting accidents would be a lot more in numbers than this!!
It saddened me to hear of this accident. It reflects badly on all of us, even though it only took one person to slip up. I truly hope this won’t deter anyone from allowing us to safely hunt on their land in the future.

One wonders if you would be so understanding if those "couple of guys" were shooting centerfire?

even if i died, neither of us would be at fault. yes he would have pulled the trigger, but it would be nearly impossible for him to know whats it in the bush. i had permission to hunt the property i was on, they had permission for the property they were on. sure people would play the blame game, but the fact is it would simply be an accident.

it gets rather annoying when you hear people say "theres no such thing as an accident when it comes to guns, only stupidity or negligence".
