That's a question that is going to start a war. If I told you like most you wont believe me anyway but I spent money to get the turkey gun I have and only shoot the best of products which cost...
 
This year i had one at 37 yards, and he dropped like a rock, tested my pattern before, had about 35 pellets in pattern, 40 yrd test, looked like a train hit it, still flapped around a second after and stopped, the other flew 10 ft infront of me, id have no issue with going 40-45 yards with my pattern.
 
73 yards on a Jake. I shot twice but the second shot wasn't needed. He was whirling around in circles flopping over himself with the first one. That was a 12 ga 2oz #4 thru a. .650 choke. Took a Tom at 60 yards with 2-1 / 4oz #4 with my 10ga. And just over 40 yards with my crossbow. Took a hen at 12 yards with my compound. Most shots are within 30 yards however. Know your gun and how it patterns. Step up in weight if u choose to take further shots but remember bigger shot equals less pellets
 
The only bird I've lost was bout 33 yards. 2 shots of #6 broke a wing and got lots of feathers where it rolled. It make it into thick brush and I couldn't find it
 
Well...I know this is bad on my part, I forgot to pattern my new load this year....two turkeys down ....Mossberg 500 with factory turkey choke and remington duplex 4 x6's. Tom Down at approximately 25 yards (Flopped once and was done), and a jake (Flopped around, stepped on its neck to finish) at approx 40 yards
