Looking to take my 80 year old,but still very spry, dad on a spring turkey hunt somewhere here in BC.I've heard that there are turkeys in the Okanagan but can never seem to get a lock on where. So figured I'd ask those in the know.I'm willing to travel just about anywhere in the southern province for a few days.If you prefer to PM me that's fine too. Thanks in advance!

Quite a few guys from huntingbc.ca hunt turkeys. Are you a member there? Should get lots of info there. I'd tell you if I knew, but I've never hunted them in BC!:)

You could take a serious look at the east kootenays. I see some decent flocks in the "south country" or hunting zones 4-3 and 4-22, as well as along the kootenay river into zones 4-20, 4-21. One thing you might find tough is knowing the private land boundaries closer in to the small towns, but maps of the private land is available on the regional district (rdek) website. There is alot of crown land here so you do not need to worry about gaining access to private land.

Interesting.I kinda thought the Kootenays was going to be the answer.I will definately look into the christina lake area too though.Rather not drive all that way if I can go to the okanagan and still have a decent chance.

I think you would need to contact the game branch about them. I think they may be limited entry and I am pretty sure that most are on private land and that you need to arrange permission well in advance

cheers mooncoon

They are moving into the OK valley slowly. A friend saw a flock up Mount McKinney road, just west of Oliver about 30 minutes.

I've hunted them hard in and around my area here - no results. I'm told that Christina lake can be a gong show on the weekends during season.

I saw ONE after hunting for 2 days near Midway. It was a hen, and not shoot worthy.

Two years ago I hunted the Christian Valley road area and saw a beast of a turkey - in someones front driveway about 10 feet from their house. As blasting it on their front deck may be a bad idea, I carried onto the woods and saw zilch. There is a workshop given by a local guy (see hunt BC per GH suggestion) that I hear is a good intro to hunting turkeys.

One thing that is needed for sure is a good call, which require proficient use. grnhawg (member here) makes very nice calls.

PM me when the season starts as I am gathering local info - I'm going too.

Sign up with huntingbc forum, lots of good help, no one will give you their honey spot but they will point you in the right direction

If there is any possibility for me to add my services I would be most pleased.
I have seen a number of these critters in the bush in a number of different locations, to my thinking they are quite abundant in the East kootenays even though I have not taken the time to go after such critters ( too much long range. If you at all plan on making it out this far I will see what I can find out.

Cheers

Can't remember the number of times that I have had to stop and wait for a flock to cross the highway......................I don't hunt them....I eat only "white" meat!!!

If anyone from AB is planning on going I'd strongly suggest you diligently start doing your homework. The bc regs are quite different from ours in some respects, including concerning no hunting areas. I personally found the online regs tough to follow, so last year acquired a paper copy. Much easier to go back and forth with maps, now I'm getting comfortable with them.

I would also suggest you do your homework and acquire maps regarding private and crown lands, with permission as necessary; keeping in mind the road corridors are heavily "touristed", and contain quite a bit of privately owned land. I used to fish one area every year, at first I just figured on trying there. After more research, I'm going further west than I had planned, mostly due to development which has taken place since I was last there. BC's available municipal maps are also different than ours, as they tend to follow the populated valley floors rather than encompassing an entire area.

I tend to be anal about planning and preparation, but we never have any problems, and always have an enjoyable hunt. This coming spring will be our first out of province hunt, and it's one we've been researching for awhile. BC may be the province next door, but it is definitely a different province, so keep that in mind.

The open season in region 4 runs april 15 - may 15. If you do decide on the kootenays drop me a pm, between tack-243 and myself we can probly cover most of the kootenay trench. If you are interested in the kootenays I would take a look on google earth and type in Wardner bc, and look up and downstream on both sides the kootenay river from there. The Tamarack and Pommier lakes area has also been productive. See what you think, the terrain is pretty forgiving for walking, and you are looking at the west slopes of the rockies with some amazing scenery. I will try and find a few turkey pics I took a few years back. I have seen flocks of 20-30 birds several times. I was out at my dad's east of Jaffray and saw a flock on the highway Friday morning of about 15, only one small tom though.

Bucky and Longbomber,
That would be fantastic fellas. My dad is getting a little long in the tooth and I don't know how many more years he'll be able to get out and walk distances so I'd like to go somewhere where the concentrations are decent to give him a chance.I think the Kootenay are the ticket. The only thing that might be a possible hang-up is that my wife is due mid April,so I guess the hunt will have to be decided by how well she is doing. Here's hoping it's all good! ;)

I hope that everything goes smoothly in April, always a joyous time.

My hunting partner had his first son a week before archery season, his wife was still in the hospital when he went out to get her some food. He stopped at my place and wants to go out an do a final tune up on the bows, a good hour in he tells me that he was just going out to get his wife food, she's still in the hospital, and he didn't tell her he was going out shooting... and then my cell rings...I thought that his wife was going to kill me, since only I would come up with an idea like that...

Thanks guys. Both are doing very well so far.
I'm pretty lucky, she is all over the drug free meat for junior.I guess it just depends on how she feels about me taking off for a week.I already have a week booked in Bamfield with her father in August for salmon and halibut so I'm hoping I can squeeze a little time out for this too.
