Hello all,

Avid firearms enthusiast...zero hunting experience (except for the few rabbits and the odd yote' as a kid) I'm reading this year's B.C. Hunting and Trapping Reg's and man o man it's pretty in-depth, comprehensive, and very foreign to a newbie like me.

I'm new to the island (coming from Van) and look forward to spending a heck of a lot of time at the range...but I'm also interested in getting into hunting for years to come. The thrill of the hunt, the trips into the wilderness, the acquiring of cool hunting gadgets and accessories...are all great, but secondary to me bringing home food to put on the table. One day I would love to bag a big moose and take home a hundred pounds of meat...but I'm thinking of starting small.

Where do I start guys? Turkey's sound lovely to me. Do any of you go out with their sights set on bringing home a few gobbler's out here on Vancouver Island?

Thanks,
Jeff.

 There are shootable turkeys on Vancouver Island???

I've lived here for years....... Ony turkeys I have seen were on farms , and the farmers may not be too happy about you hunting them :))

Years ago Sidney Island had wild turkeys, but don't think they exist today.

On the other hand we do have quail, and blue grouse .... ducks and plenty of geese.

Lots of people, myself included have seen turkeys along the Island Hwy. in the last few years North of Parksville. They must be escapes from some farm and maybe they've managed to hang on. There is no hunting season for them.

Correct. Back in the 70's wild turkeys were introduced to get up a big enough population
for paid hunts. This failed mainly due to the minks killing off the eggs and chicks.
The raccoons had their fair share as well.
The introduction of Fallow deer though, was a rousing success. :)

There is a nice pile of turkeys in the Duncan area, but they're on private land.
I've been there, and I ain't tellin'. :p

LS, those turkeys where domestic and then released by the initial first dozen Island landowners.
They even brought pheasants over and someone brought a couple of Peacocks too.
The one time I was there, we spotted a couple turkeys and a #### Peacock (didnt shoot them)
but the Island Trust was working on attempting to eradicate the Peacocks and enhance the turkey.
To the OP, read and re read the regs. and start small this fall with the likes of Grouse and Quail, but make sure you know the difference
between Mountain Quail and California Quail that where introduced many years ago.

On the north island ... i didnt believe it until I seen with my own eyes , but occasionally wild turkeys have showed up on my GF's parents farm. Were not sure if they had escaped from someone or actullay flew here from somewhere. But they do occasionally show up.

Ive never really heard of anyone to actullay go out turkey hunting on the island. It might be like the Grizzly bears showing up on the North Island. There is starting to be more sightings in recent years. However , you are not aloud to shoot them unless they are a threat.

turkeys are a threat........

just remember to yell....its coming right at us jimbo..before you pull the trigger.....

There is a sign up sheet in coombs for the turkey shoot every year, the poster goes up in the window at the post office every spring.......
