So i went turkey hunting with a buddy this saturday. I was visiting for the weekend to hunt at a spot we saw a hundred or more at during the fall deer hunt and figured we'd go see if they were still there. (my first turkey hunt)

We show up last Sat morn at 5am in the same spot we saw them all roost in the fall and there was a MESS of Gobbling coming from 50 yards all over the place! (no need to use owl call) So we set up a few decoys and spread out (bout 500 meters away from each other.) You could hear them fly down from the trees and PLOP on the ground.

A few calls on the box and they came a RUNNIN! It was like shooting fish in a barell!
“Boom” I hear from my buddies gun. He bagged one on his side of the field. The 5 that were interested in my decoys were a little spooked by the noise and after almost fleeing the area came back to my plastic birds all horned up within 10 min of me calling again. When i went boom i could hear another 20 or more all around me shock gobbling everywhere.

We were back making breakfast by 6:15am and had a bird on the spinny thing inside the bbq by early afternoon drinking beer and bragging to everyone how easy it was.

Soooooo. I decide to skip work Monday and stay up north (as Sunday is no gun hunting there and I left my crossbow at home) so I can go fill my other tag at the turkey market of a field.

I get there a little early, set up my decoys and hear no gobbling.(funny maybe cause I’m earlier) I wait till 5:30 and use the locater call…… nothing!!
At about 6am I see a hen go walking through the open part of the field not paying any attention to my decoys (probably wondering where everyone else was like I was.) At 6:30 I saw a big yotte streak across the field and into the treed area where all the turkeys had roosted all the other times.
At 715am I shot the noisy freakin bird that was squeeking in my ear all morning long and packed up and came home.

We went to the same spot yesterday and it was the same deadness.

So my question to all you turkey hunters is…. What are the roosting behaviors of these ugly buggers? Is it common for them to roost in the same spot? Did we scare em away last weekend? Did yottes? Is someone feeding em elsewhere and they moved?

We heard 2 shotty blasts minutes apart and very close to us yesterday morning. I bet that was the same flock we were sitting on.

Turkeys have relatively big home ranges. Chances are the shots kinda spooked them off and they just moved to another area. You'l likell have to rescout them and then go back and kill another one. Good luck!

Too bad as my buddies land is 400 acres and only these 3 were treed. The only other treed areas are fencelines. (not really good roosting ground) and the neighbour is a jerk!

Do you think they'll come back this season? I'm going to try again a day this week but it's a lot of gas to get there for a morning of quiet.

You don't have to set up near the roost. Go to the closest fenceline to where the birds are and try callling them to you. I've watched birds come across 3 hay fields to get to my decoy.

I wouldn't be suprised if a Tom covered 2-3 KM in a day.

Be patient and don't give up...remember the birds are always still there, the birds or any game for that matter never just disappear.....they are just hiding and finding them if half the fun or battle depending on how you view things... still two weeks left/plenty of time......
