Alright well I have been looking around for a shotgun for the girlfriend and I figure for her first gun I thought of is the 870 youth in the 20g combo.
She wants to get out for turkey and deer so I figure the 20 gauge with the rifled barrel will be nice for shooting slugs but how would the gun be for shooting for turkey ???
I do plan on getting a turkey choke tube for the gun.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

Absolutely nothing wrong with using a 20 gauge for Turkey. If the gun fits your girlfriend and she can shoot it with confidence you will do just fine. I would definitely go with a turkey choke.

Just my 0.02¢

Alright thanks!!
I have some ppl pushing my idea of the 20 and they say go 12. I know she could shoot a 12 as she has with my browning gold semi but that doesnt last long as she cant keep the gun steady as it is heavy for her as she only weighs 120 and the length of pull is too far.
Im thinking the 20 would be a nice gun that she could use to hunt and use for them days of shooting clay with no problems.
Also I figure that if i were to go with the youth 12 gauge im thinking it would have more recoil then my browning just because its a smaller and lighter gun, would that be right to say ???

My wife uses a 20 gauge for ducks. Works great. I imagine a turkey would die just fine with a load of 4, 5 or 6 from the 20 gauge.

Cheers

I have heard people complain about the lack of performance with a 20g w/ slugs on deer, I am sure a 16 would work a little better. I got my girlfriend shooting one no problem and she is 5'3" 110lbs, put a decent recoil pad on there and it keeps them relatively happy.

i love 16 g but you can not get any 3 inch magnum turkey loads in 16 .the 20g 3 inch turkey loads are very good out to 40 yrds no problem at all DUTCH

Other thing about the 16 is the lack of selection of ammo and the price i seem to find is usually more then the 20.
Also I don't think Remington has a 16 gauge 870. Its nice also that with the 870's you are able to buy allot of stuff as in stocks, choke tubes, and so on.
How can you beat a well know make and model for $510 +tax with 2 barrels.

True, I reload my shotgun shells so it is not so bad price wise, you get any lead shell case when you chance on it and it will last you a few more reloads. I shot a goose flying over my dads house last season with steel bb's 2.75" and it dropped (of course I aimed neck and a couple hit the shoulder), it fell into a caragana bush 3 feet from my dads truck. Weighed the thing after I plucked and gutted it, not a word of a lie this thing was over 18lbs, biggest goose I have EVER shot.

The recoil from a 20 pump will likely be similar to an auto 12. I shot my 12 all fall for ducks and a few weeks back took some old 3" 20s after crows, shooting out of my O/U, I could feel it.

A limbsaver pad could be a good investment.

You tell me - Will a 20gauge kill a turkey at 40 yards ?

Well if you consider that they make turkey loads in 20g and turkey chokes in 20g..then yes, the 20g is perfectly capable for turkey.
