Turkey in BC

I am trying to plan a Turkey hunt for the spring, and have never hunted Turkey before.
I would like to go somewhere within a 3 hour drive of the lower mainland.

Any area suggestions, and tips on how to find them, I hear they can be illusive.

Firearm / ammo recommendation?
I would like to use my 20ga with 3" loads, but not sure if its enough gun.

Well an invite and you will never have to worry about learning not enough about turkeys. Pm me and I'll send you one of my Learning DVD's and will say that you can then make up your mind on the offer. You find the place and we'll kill birds with 20 gauges no problem. O I will bring the shells you don't need to buy them and wont for years to come ....

I'm no expert, but I did get a turkey a few years back, and should have got one last year (long story). Cranbrook area seems to have lots, but numbers have been down recently... and it's more than 3 hours from Van. Traditional method is a shotgun (20 gauge is fine; #6 shot aim for base of neck). But in BC you can use rimfire rifle also. Scoped .22 or .17 and shoot 'em at longer distance. Key is to scout an area, listen for the gobblers in morning and evening; try to watch feeding & movement patterns. As for calling - less is more. Early in the season is better. Last year I tried the last few days and there was po gobblingand the hens were all on nests. Good luck!
 
Only place in BC i've ever gotten a turkey was south of Cranbrook right around the Bull River. I was working at a mine up there and used to see them everywhere on the drive in. It was several years ago so I cant say if they are as plentiful now. And its obviously longer than 3 hours. Plenty of deer and some elk up there too
