Turkey Opener

Got out Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Only heard gobbles Sunday morning and couldn't get them to come in. Lots of geese in our area now, so I'll blame them. Was able to snap a few decent pics regardless.

He certainly could use to be better concealed. I like to pick spots further into cover myself. If I set up on a bush edge, I try to get 4 or 5 yards back into it, so I am not so exposed, and can make a little movement, without the turkey noticing. Their eyesight is amazing, and will pick up any small movement, and the way you are exposing yourself in that pick, doesn't leave you with much margin for error.

Just what 7.62's saying. You can do it from there, but they pick up on the slightest little movement. As long as you don't move, you're fine. But you have to get that gun up to shoot them. If you're in that position, make sure they're looking the other way when you bring it up, and freeze wherever you are when they turn their heads.

With mine on opening day....I was waaaayyyyy out of position. My only option was to giv'r quick and get em moving! AND THEY WERE!!

Luckily, they can't run 1200fps.

congrats to everyone who got a bird this year. nothing for me yet. Cold, raining and windy. I heard lots of gobbling but they wouln't leave the swamp. Maybe tomorrow!!!

Day three and still no joy.
Saw a nice herd of about a dozen deer though.

Off to play HALO3, Gotta cure my itchy trigger finger

well I went out the other day and bagged my first turkey this year.... In all things a big ceder swamp... you could not see more than a 10 yds in either direction.... I heard him gooble and followed the noise... as I got really close I sat down and waited.... after a few hen clucks he came in.... showed himself would be better..... He walked within a few yds of me.... I waited for him to turn and the rest is history...Was a jake....the really strange thing about this hunt was where the turkey was located.... thick cedar swamp....water everywhere.. when I shot him he fell right into the water and started his turkey dance..... Water and turkey who would of thought....

All the turkey's in my hunting areas are roosting above water. I have some properties that are down right, swamp, swamp and more swamp. Invariably, the Turkey's are roosted in the swamp. I think they like knowing predators aren't around them due to the water.

I went out opening day and had a big Tom come in about 100 yards, but there was too many hens I guess keeping him busy:D. I drove by a few spots with my buddy after and saw quite a few in the field of another spot I haven't really tried and just put it in the back of my mind.

I asked my buddy to come out with me to the spot we saw the turkeys' after the first day hunt and he couldn't go on Tuesday as he had something stupid to do. I think he said it was work :(

Anyway Iwent myself and got all set up with two hen and one jake decoy on a the sod field and sat in the fence line with my back to the woods. Did some calling and all hell let loose with three Toms coming in view in 50 minutes wanting to put a betting on my Jake decoy. They were so close together I couldn't initially get a shot off but eventually after a couple of exitted seconds I took the last one in the scrum. If my buddy came we would no doubt have two.

Mine weighed 18.5 lbs with about a 4.5 inch beard. I would have taken pictures but my buddy didn't come with the camera :) I'm going out for another tomorrow and buddy said he is coming with me. I said how about work?He said he's calling in with the Bird FLU :)

went out again yesterday morning, ended up walking around for 4 hours trying to locate something.. no responses. the boss thinks they got hit hard over the weekend. eventually as we're going back to the car a turkey walks right infront of us (about 30 yards) takes a quick peek and flies away, we didnt even get to see if it had a beard...

later on we set up some decoys, after 20 minutes (i was getting late for work) we decide to pack it in for the day, the boss goes to the field next to us to take a look, naturally, as soon as i take down a couple of the decoys i hear a gobble.. kissed the dirt for a little while, and he was responsive at first, then .. nothing.

I'm going to try a different spot tomorrow morning.

I have been having the same problem, but not so much other hunters. I think they are just getting hened up so fast we dont stand a chance. On tuesday I was the only one in a bush were only I have permission and I could only get three gobbles out of them. I went to have a look around to see if anyone else had been hunting back there but found nothing. Maybe the weather pushed the back the bredding back farther than I had thought or it has just been plain bad luck!!! hoping for better results this weekend.

Well..... our season opens up tomorrow morning. Only 4 days and only from 1/2 hr before sunrise till noon. I'll be out first thing in the morning with my fingers crossed!! Funny thing is though, where we have been seeing the birds for the past few weeks, they haven't been coming out this week. Any ideas? Would they change spots suddenly like that?
Wish me luck!!

What's this I hear about a fall turkey hunt in Ontario? Is this truth? Any chance it will apply to the WMUs' between Belleville to Kingston?? If so, I'll have a chance for a turkey when I get back.

Found this on Yahoo, not sure how true it is though. Pretty lame they're not letting 65 in for the fun but I guess MNR knows best.

There are a few places (listed below) that are going to allow it this year. The cool part is you may shoot ANY turkey during the new fall season, not just bearded ones.
The fall hunting seasons are in the following WMU's
WMU 64 in Kemptville District
WMU 67 in Kemptville and Peterborough Districts
WMU 68 in Peterborough District
WMU 73 in Peterborough and Aurora Districts
WMUs 76, 77, 81, 82 and 84 in Midhurst District
WMU 78 in Aurora District
WMU 89 in Guelph District
WMUs 90, 92, and 93 in Aylmer District

Well unless something has changed since last week when I spoke to the Aurora MNR ranger on duty that is not written in stone yet. They are still concidering the Fall hunt.

Not skunked this year!!! ? I shot a nice jake this morning. It weighed 14.44lbs, 4in beard and 1\2in spurs. Not big enough to win that turkey call but I will take it!!!!!!!!!!!

How about an opening day flintlock tom?:D

Got him interested right off the roost. He had to come off a ridge about 250 yards away, but by 6:20am it was a done deal. The gun is a 20ga. flintlock. My max. range is 25 yards, with <20 yard shots preferred. I've hunted a bit since, but the cold weather has shut the birds down here and they have been totally unresponsive to calling since this past Monday. I prefer to hunt the birds when they are responsive - having a bird gobbling his fool heading off and coming to find me is a lot more satisfying than bushwacking one... but I'm not above bushwacking if calling is just not working. ;) It's also rained a lot and I don't care to hunt in the rain. Tom was 18.5lbs, 8 3/4" beard and 7/8" spurs.
