Here are the results of patterning with my Winchester 1300 Black Shadow 28"bbl c/w The Undertaker choke tube.

I tested out the following shells:
Winchester 3" HV #6
Winchester 3" Double X #6 and #5
Kent Ultimate Turkey #6

The results:

40yds (not gonna happen)

35yds - possible but not probable

30yds - ideal

25 yds - ideal

20yds - dead before he hits the ground

15yds - not gonna feel a thing!

PLEASE TRY THE FEDERAL 3" FLIGHT CONTROL #6. I'm sure you will be pleased! What is the constriction of that choke? For #6 shot the pattern looks very open and not as concentrated as one would like. 28" barrels tend to like .665's and with traditional wads a ported choke is a great idea.

FYI I havn't had much luck with Kent turkey loads either. How did the Winchester Extended Range #6 patern out at 40 yards??

Patterning

I downloaded the target off the internet - I will post the location tomorrow as it is saved on my work notebook...ya I know hard at work;)

The Choke has an ID of .572.....I'm not going to get another one to try and after looking downrange I realise how far 40 yds actually is when looking at a fist sized turkey head - getting spoiled looking through a 5-15x40mm scope I guess.

I think I'll just work on my technique and see if I can get them within 35yds before taking them, as last thing I want to do is wound one.

I was out today looking around Smithville/Vineland and I have not seen any out and about. Has anyone seen turkeys in the fields?

i have a daughter that lives a few minutes south of barrie...she see,s them daily..

fogduckker,
The problem is that I do not have anywhere to hunt up near Barrie - I have permission on two farms in Vineland and according to the MNR Vineland is expected to have an excellent + season for Turkey but I have not heard of anyone seeing them as of yet:(

In anycase if you know of a place please let me know - by the way here is the link to the Turkey targets - http://www.dto.com/hunting/downloads/

Thanks,

John

i tried the federal flight control shells in my 870 and the pattern wasnt very good but still waaay better than yours at 40 yards. my 870 with modified choke shooting 1oz of steel #2's will throw a better pattern than that:confused:

my single shot 12g with full choke and 23/4" turkey load will throw a pattern like that at 60-70 yards so i think u have a problem! lol :p

if you have any buddies into turkey hunting ask them if they want to swap shells to try and find what your gun/choke likes because every gun is different.

just think..even though my daughter gets to see them... it sucks as you said...no were to hunt them...
but keep your self posted here...if i find a spot were i can invite a gun nutz to try and get one..you will hear from me

I use an 870 with 23" barrel and and 3 1/2" Remington 2 1/4oz #6 with the stock remington extra full choke tube. The target you posted for 20 yards looks like my 40 yard pattern. I agree with the rest of the group, play with the ammo, I know that is a good choke but maybe the ammo is just not right. I got my turkey last year running into the decoys at 21 yards, did not move but I would have no problem with 30+ yard shots.
