Anyone else love the Turkey shoots ?
For the last few years a bunch of us up here have been doing our rounds and trying to make all local shoots. Great way to spend the winter months.
Its getting harder to find shoots these days as most don't really advertise except for the odd legion. I'm thinking of setting up a webpage/calendar of all shoots (in central Ontario)....for now, unless it gathers more interest then maybe more provinces ? If anybody has info on up coming shoots lets start by posting here. Location,time,choked/non choked...ect.
Thanks I will start.

Every 3rd Sat 11am at New Lowell legion
Thornton fire fighters at Wolfs Den in Utopia (check their website for date)
Bond Head every last Sunday of month (not sure they are running yet)

Usually prizes are meat and most of us call them turkey shoots. The card type are also called pepper the paper. Some have a clay target event and give meat prizes. Often they are just cash back to the winners, as turkeys and meat prizes are too expensive and you can't make any money for the club.

We used to hold about 10 per year at the Oxford club in Woodstock. The same people were spending the day working at them all and got tired of doing them.

I understand that they hold a monthly shoot at East Elgin, but I am not sure what the format is.

So its target shooting? Rifle or clays?

Perhaps the decline is because people dont know what the hell they are. I see the odd sign around here and it simply says "Turkey Shoot" with a date and address. Not exactly informative.

As soon as I saw this thread title I thought "this guy must be from Central Ontario." I have lived in 3 provinces and driven back and forth across the nation multiple times but have never heard the term "Turkey Shoot" used to describe a shooting event outside of the 705 area code. Although my Edmonton curling club has a rock throwing challenge once a year they call a turkey shoot.

30 or so years ago, I stopped by a turkey shoot and shot my target with a borrowed Auto 5. It was the first time I ever fired a shotgun.

Shotgun. Could be clay targets or a paper card. Usually the card is in a steel holder. Club supplies the shells. HAHA (near Ancaster, Ontario) holds a big clay target shoot on Boxing Day. Marketing could always be better.

I am in the 519 area and love the turkey shoots .we have the best luck with the old Winchester model 12s with the 30 inch full choke .been going to turkey shots as long as I can remember ,30 years .Dutch

Last time I was at a card turkey shoot, one of the chaps had a gun that he had worked up specifically for the game. He won all the turkeys. Anyone with a regular shotgun was wasting his time.

When I was young our local legion had turkey shoots at the indoor 22 range ( the high school gym :) ) . The targets were paper and you had to use their guns which were Winchester 52's IIRC and prizes were live turkeys supplied by local farmers, my dad donated a few.

That is another reason ... but I didn't want to say it. We used to eliminate the gun after it won two prizes.

Obviously the term turkey shoot has several meanings across this country. But one would expect that a shotgun competition for a 'turkey shoot' would first off attract off season turkey hunters with extra full chokes versus someone with just thier regular hunting shotgun.

maybe

we shoot a 6inch card at 100 feet with small shot mostly #4 that are supplied .12 men shoot at one card each at 2 $ a shot .the card with the most pellets holes wins a frozen turkey or side of bacon we have one place that has bags of yellow perch as a prize ,most times we have a burger and soup as well as a bar for non shooters ,most of the shoots are for a charity .great way to spend a Saturday morning .we do have a two price limit for each gun .as well as a class for stock guns and modified guns .I shot a marlin pump with a 40inch barrel for years but most clubs now have a limit of 30inch or less .Dutch

Believe it or not, I've won a few rounds using my M4 Super-90 with a card choke on it, so you don't need a big long shotgun.

Cannon

They still do at my Old Army unit. on the Xmas dinner. They play sports, Have a turkey shoot ( They used the grid chart with numbers tho )

There used to be a shoot in Burnt River that had .22 l.r. and centrefire rifle as well. Rifle shoot was at 100 yds, the .22 around 20-30 yds. One shot, closest to the centre won. For shotgun, they had steel plates with a 4" hole cut in the centre. An ordinary piece of paper slid in behind, and that was the target. It was just as important to know where your gun was shooting as it was to have a tight choke. A slight shift in the way you held the gun could result in having the densest part of the pattern missing the target. I think that was Burnt River that did it that way, but I could be confusing it with a different shoot.

Always wanted to stop by the New Lowell Legion and see what its all about. Parents live just down the road. Would you mind PM'ing me some details? Cost and what to bring kind thing.

The one I attend every 3rd Sat is great in NewLowell. Good folks, support the Legion. Good cheap lunch and bar when you're done shooting. 3$ per shot. 3 wins and your gun is disqualified. 6' metal target holders (10 shooters per round) . Best card wins frozen turkey or box of bacon. Usually goes 20-25 rounds depending on turnout.
