Title says it all. I think I will finally get drawn for Turkey this year and even if I don't I'd better pick up a gun for next year. I want the option of using this rig for deer in the fall also.

Really your price point will determine what can be considered. Obviously there are many different price points we can look at. For economy you can expect to spend $500 and your looking at a Remington 870 Express Super Mag 3.5" 12 guage and a turkey choke like a Primos Jelly Head or Kicks Gobblin Thunder...even a Remington Ventilator. You would be wise to have the receiver tapped and a weaver base installed for a Holo sight or something of that nature. Your deer hunting with a rig like this would be limited to shooting parker style slugs or BRI sabots out of a rifled choke. Your effective range would be inside 100 yards. For $750 you'd be into a combo gun or a 870 SPS with a smooth bore cantileaver barrel able to handle chokes. The Benelli Super Nova is a hell of a good gun and is available in a turkey config. for this type of $$$. For $1000 plus your into multiple barrels, a short (24") smooth bore for turkey and a long (24") fully rifled barrel for high volocity sabot slugs. What do you want to spend?????

I used the 870 Express Super mag 12 ga. for 2 turkey's last spring and one deer this fall. I bought a remington saddle style scope mount and a bushnell shotgun scope. For the turkey I used a Rem choke extra full and the Federal 3.5" controlled flight wad with #4's. For the deer a reload; 525 gr. Lyman slug in a target wad over 50 gr of Blue Dot with Remington hulls and Winchester primers.

In my opinion with was a very econmical and effective set-up.

By the way the 3.5" magnum loads have a significant recoil....

Doesn't Remington offer a rifled barrel for the 870 express?

Yeah you can buy a Remington express Super Mag combo (wood Parkerized) with a 28" V/R and a 20 inch rifled sight rifled barrel for $699.00. Throw a long eye relief scope or reddot on the reciever and get a good turkey choke and Bob's your Uncle!
How much money do you want to spend?... cuz there are some really nice guns available for about three times the money.;)

I think the fact that I'm even considering a slug/turkey combo as oppossed to buy two dedicated rigs shows my new found resolve for a more fiscal minded approach to this years gun purchases. Besides Ike jr. hits the big 14 this year and I want to get him an R1. So the budget needs to stretch a little farther.

870 all the way than Ike. They offer 20-23 inch rifled barrels (I think Hart offers a 24 inch too) and multiple smooth bore lengths from 12.5 inches to 32 inches...
If you plan on being budget minded, IMHO, AN 870 is the way to go...
If you want a good budget minded semi, the stoeger 2000 combo gun is a good choice IMHO... Much lighter than the 870, but not as rugged.

Of course there's a rifled slug barrel for the 870 Express. I have a separate 870 with this barrel (cantilevered) and scope. I found that accuracy to about 75+ yards with my smooth bore and the Lyman slug reloads was easily good enough. Plus with a smooth bore you can keep a few shells of #6's in case there's any grouse wanting to come home for dinner. You can't do that with a rifled barrel.

Sure you can... You'd be suprised how well a slug barrel/choke works for shot

A long eye relief scope is imperative ... one of the more popular scopes for slugguns is the Bushnell Banner Dusk till Dawn at about $100.00.
