Turkeys in BC?

Excellent to have you on board here Othmar!I think you will find that there is a lot of interest in turkey hunting in BC.It would be fantastic if you came down to the lowermainland to do a course.Perhaps one of the folks who are connected to a certain clubs could offer a place?Does the course have shooting in it for the patterning part or is it all classroom? If its all classroom we could do it almost anytime.Once again great to have your expertise here!

Welcome Othmar,

I have contacted the hunting director at Poco, but it doesn't seem like they are too interested. perhaps they don't think there is enough interest? I don't know. Regardless, if there is not one offered in the lower mainland before march, I will go to Merritt.

Thanks for the welcome. I would love to come to the Lower Mainland and see my old stomping grounds again.:D

To your answer, no there will be no shooting at the course. Having people shooting would bring a new set of problems needing more "staff" and cost to the club. However, I will spend a good part of course on explaining how a gun has to be patterned with illustrations. If all goes well I will have the turkey targets back from the printers so that course participants can take some home.

I was also hoping that by the time the Merritt course starts I would have my own signature line turkey calls available but it turns out that Heirloom Game Calls has a backlog of several months in production. I still keep my fingers crossed though.

Thanks Rutger for trying. I checked it out and it seems that Poco has an event going on and maybe it would be too to much to deal with of having two events of that size in one month.

Shhhh, Bucky you're not supposed to tell everybody that turkey hunting addictive.:D But your're right, turkey hunting quickly can become a passion. Of all the seminars I give the turkey seminars are my personal favorites. I am already pumped for spring season.

Nice pictures by the way, I particularly like the second picture, it's a beautiful tom and the third picture with the jake hanging on the fence post with the gun leaning on the side is a very traditional display.

thanks huntwriter,i started hunting turkeys here in ontario in 2003.what a great challenge. the first 2 pics are of last year ,that jake at the tree weighed just over 18lb.the lat pic is from 2007.if you head this way let me know i'll put you on a bird. Bucky

Thanks for the invite Bucky. I may take you up on it. Ontario hosts the annual Canadian outdoor writers conference this year and I might head that way. If I get bored I always can hook up with you.:D

Nice birds there 6.5 and congratulations.:)
The Merriam’s are not the largest sub species but sure are the most beautiful looking turkeys. Judging by the pictures you have two jake birds there, not toms. You can tell the difference by looking at the roughed up and missing primary fan feathers. Another “dead giveaway” between a jake and a mature tom are the middle 3 to 4 primary fan feathers. If they are shorter or longer then it is a jake. My guess is these birds are about one year old, judging from the size and color of the dewlap and carucnles. Still it’s a job well done with good memories attached. Keep it up and good luck. :D

yup they were jakes for sure i have taken some big toms too but had these pics handy, i have found it dosnt matter to me big tom or jakes they are all fun to take:D iam definitely not a trophy turkey hunter.:D
