Turkeys in Newfoundland

Wild turkeys are showing up here and there throughout NL, even in St John`s. These are not native to the island so does anyone know if they would be considered an "invasive species"? how about hunting them? They are here now, and probably to stay.
NL may have the most oppressive provincial firearms and hunting regulations that i`ve seen (in addition to federal laws and regulations) and I`ve lived in 4 provinces, so if anyone has any information on turkey hunting here, please post.
 
What do the provincial hunting regulations say? Is there a turkey season? Not an invasive species like the hogs are. Just wait till they swim their way over.
 
I wouldn't classify the wild turkey as an invasive species. The were once abundant across North American, although I can't speak for NL.
Someone obviously brought them over as there was no way they flew that distance from the mainland. They are only capable of short flights, although they are big runners.
I would contact your Lands and Forests people to see if it was part of a relocation program. the wild turkey has returned in good numbers to Ontario as part of that program

If there was an opportunity to hunt them I'd be quite happy about it if I were you. They don't really compete with anything in their search for food so no worries there. I would also think your winters would be tough on them as deep snow over long periods of time really increases mortality rates.

Said on the news that nobody really knows where they have come from, my guess is someone brought them over and released them, or they are escapees from local farms.
they do ok in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to, from what I hear, even with the extreme cold out there. doesn't`t really get that cold here, and when it does, it only lasts a day or two.
Hogs, i`d like to hunt a few of them
 
Government bureaucrats outright lie when it's in thier own best interest. A bit more than a decade ago a NS sportsmen's group proposed introducing sufficient numbers of wild turkeys from elsewhere to create a breeding population, hoping the NS fish and game department would have given thumbs up end game of NS wild turkey season. Was totally shot down because the government said they were never ever in NS. Henceforth an evasive species.

They had a special stocking program here it took decades but Manitoba has a huntable population. Biggest problem is they like to move to town and become a nuisance
