Turkey's...what would you do?

I have a flock of 6-10 turkeys on or around my property and I'm wondering if i should hunt them this year or wait a year or two and let the numbers grow. Now I know that one Tom tags alot of hens but would I be better to wait. What would you do?

well if me.......id invite someone for a turkey shoot and dinner:)
 
I hear what your saying , SB, if you have only 6-10 turkeys, how many are hens? How many are toms? I'd wait another year myself, let them get established. Find some Gunnutz buddies who have a lot of Turkey to hunt and go there. ;)
 
It depends where you live, turkeys move a lot more than most people think in the course of a year. I would personally hunt them, but if you own all the land around and there is no way anyone else would come by to hunt them then maybe hold off. If you are in an area with a good population surrounding your property, a new Tom will pick up those hens and you will have no problems with population.
 
You folks need a lesson in biology....
Shoot the Toms... there will still be more turkeys next year as long as you don't shoot the hens.
Geezuz is everyone eating frootloops here or what???
 
From what I understand Toms usually sire most hens before season opens and there will be another to take it's place I am sure. As they say if there are hens they will ***!!!! Get out and hunt them only take one this year and if you are concerned make sure that there is a jake amonst them.

A friend of mine hunts about a two acre pine bush and that is the only bush in the concession. In the winter there are no turkey yarding in the pine bush because of its size and feed, we start a lot of coyotes there. For the last two seasons he has shot two toms out of that bush and last week I saw 6 hens and three toms there again. My advise is set the table for turkey.

Agreed ! There is no guarantee that these birds will be here next year at all. They are not like deer and hang around for years. They spread out this spring and you may or may not see them again. If you see birds next winter, it most likely will be a totally different flock. Shoot Away!!!:)
 
Just an update. Decided to hunt else where this spring. Could not figure where to set up on the ones at home.
Got a jake this morning 12.5lbs but looked about 300 at a buddies farm. watched him for over 2 hrs before coming into range
 
If the hens have their nests on your property, the young will return every year. Besides you might as well go enjoy what your land has to offer .Hens can lay 3-14 eggs or something so your guaranteed atleast one new bird per hen per year, so for good god sakes go get a tom!!
 
Hunt them you have the enough. The number of turkeys here at home fluctuate yearly and weekly. Some weeks they're are 9, sometimes there are none to be found. Hunt some now before they go scratching for food on your neighbors side of the fence.
