I've been thinking about getting an 870. I saw new 870 turkey for 329.95 plus tax. 23" barrel. I thought it was a good price so I picked it up. I was thinking of eventually doing several mods: side saddle, pistol grip, AR stock, mag extension etc. But have a few questions.

Is there any way to get around the indents in the mag tube so that a mag extension would be functional?

I was also thinking of trading the 23" barrel for a 21" stamped 3-1/2 in the EE forum.

Will an AR stock hold up to the recoil of the 3-1/2 shells?

What are the rail options if the barrel is ribbed?

I instaled an extension on a wingmaster, to get rid of the indent I used the socket of a wrench that had relatively the same size of the tube ans smashed it with a hammer. insert the socked in the tube, on the indent, the tub should rest on an anvil and you smash it till it get flat, the barrel shoulf fit a bit tighter on the tube but it worked for me (i made this under the supervision of my senior gunsmith)

Other than the LCF, why do you want to put an AR stock onto the 870 ? I haven't seen any AR stock that would remotely be comfortable on anything that recoils. I've got an R3 pad on my 870, along with an Eagle stock pack which has a thin piece of high density foam underneath it to put my eye in line with a Burris SpeedDot. Even with magnum turkey loads, the gun doesn't kick me in the cheek or shoulder. When turkey season's done, I take the red-dot off the rail, put the Vang-Comp barrel back on, screw on the mag extension, and have a perfectly serviceable tactical shottie. BTW, any decent gunsmith can take those dimples on the mag tube out for you.

Well, a little update. Decided to go with the Hogue 12" LOP stock and forend and a messa tactical 6 shot side saddle. Still looking for a 21 inch 3-1/2 camber barrel and eventually a mag tube extension.

Did you discuss the option of cutting and crowning your existing barrel down to 18" or whatever you prefer with Casey? It's actually quite reasonable to do so, and 23" barrels are probably easier to find than a shorter one.

only real downside would be the lack of a choke after.

By the way, I have the same gun and Casey worked his magic on it for me last year. stripped the express finish and gunkoted it for me. now it's a turkey assassin. oh wait no, thats me.

check it out.

I would only go down to 21" barrel because thats the shortest 3.5 chamber with rem choke I've seen from remington. I'm happy enough with the 23" inch barrel that I would not spend the money to cut and re-thread it for chokes.

Nice 870 turkey you have. Is that a Ramline stock?

It's done! :) Got the gun exactly the way I wanted it. (for now )

870 super magnum, factory 21" 3-1/2 chamber barrel with Rem choke, Hogue short LOP stock and forend, +3 remongton mag tube extension.
(I love the EE forum)
